Default Media Net for laptop connection

I used to use the Medianet unlimited package (aon an Edge phone) from
At&t/Cingular to get an internet connection from my laptop when I
traveled. I haven't used it in more than a year, but an upcoming trip
has me trying to get my new Vista laptop configured to use it.

I've read through the FAQs and configured it the same way that I
always did using a userID of WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and a password of
CINGULAR1. When I try to connect, I get an 'error 734 the PPP link
control protocol was terminated'. I did a search for this error and it
seems to indicate that the userid or password is incorrect.

My old laptop is still around and I tried it from there using my old
configuration that used to work. I get the same error.

I'm wondering if AT&T/Cingular has changed the userid or password. Or,
perhaps, they have blocked Media Net users from doing what I am trying
to do. I'm not going to spend the money for an expensive data plan
since my usage is pretty small.

Does anyone have this working?

Barry

Is the phone that you are trying to use now also an Edge phone and not a
3G phone? With the newer 3G phones, you leave the userid and password
blank.

Make sure that you have the extra initialization settings for the
wap.cingular APN in each modem profile. Sometimes, if you plug the
phone's data cable into a different USB port, it will show up as a
different modem profile.

I don't know much about Vista to know if there is anything OS specific
that you have to do differently. Do you have an XP machine you could
take or can you dual boot XP? You could also try to connect with
Cingular Connection Manager if it is still around.

Good luck!

Have you reviewed your account online to make sure that the MEdiaNet hasn't
magically disappeared? Are you still paying for it?
Can you connect to MEdiaNet with the built in phone browser?

You might visit
https://www.wireless.att.com/support...device-support

The "Laptop" pages seem to have all the information for a Laptop
Connect, you need to adjust as you noted, for MEdiaNet.

It looks different between Vista and WniXP, but I didn't look at the
detail.

For my current Nokia 6126, the Nokia PC Suite "Internet" icon set up a
proper "WAP" login. On My Motorola, I recall that Motorola Phone Tools
setup an "ISP" login, and I only needed to adjust the login name.

The phone is Edge, not 3G

I went back to my old XP laptop which used to work with this phone and
got a similar error. I have a suspicion that AT&T has plugged the
loophole which allowed laptops to use MediaNet. I may have to use the
$60 Data Connect service for the time I'll be traveling.

I didn't try AT&T's Communication Manager, but may do so if nothing
else looks better.

I did review my account and MediaNet was on it. I was able to use my
phone to get to my email.

The web page that you mentioned is for configuring Data Connect. I
tried the changes for Media Net and that was when I got the error. I
may just pay the $60 for the month or so that I'll be traveling.

Thanks for the reply,
Barry

I just tested my WinXP-Bluetooth-Nokia 6126-AT&T WAP connection.
It still works.

Bluetooth Modem Properties, Advanced,
+CGDCONT=,,"wap.cingular"
Phone Number *99#
User Name WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password CINGULAR1

In the "modems" section, can you go to the diagnostics tab and query the
modem?

Thanks for the configuration details and the fact that it still works.
My new computer had a DVD drive failure and is out for a warranty
repair. As soon as it arrives back, I'll give it another try using
what you posted. Sounds promising.
