Default New SMS

I just signed up for Cingular.

With old provider, (Verizon) You could check your used mins free. I
noticed today when checking on cingular, That it sends your a sms with
the info.

Is this a free service or do I have to pay for this ? I don't have a sms
plan and don't want to have to start paying for them.

Also with verizon If I wanted to forward a call to another number I
would just enter *72 and the number. But I was told by a friend that it
has to be setup in the phone settings to forward a call and then do it
again in the settings to turn it off. It sounds like a lot of hassle to
have to go into the settings every time if this is the case.

I'm enjoying Cingular much better then verizon. Mostly with blue tooth
and my in car GPS System. Because of verizon turning this off, I'm
seeing so much more between the phone and the GPS That I never knew was
there.

I've seen a few spots that coverage is a little worse then with verizon.
But it's not a deal breaker.

Many phones have a menu setting for forwarding calls. RTFM.

I did RTFM Jerk. That's why I pointed out that verizon does not have
that in there menu. You enter *72 then the number not go thru the time
wasting menu.

That time of month again john ? Take a midol and chill out.

With all due respect, John, it doesn't appear that the OP asked for any
help. He was just commenting on what he perceived to be Cingular's inferior
process for forwarding calls. YOU were the one who was ill-mannered by
interjecting RTFM into the conversation.

You don't necessarily have to go to the phone settings, but the dial
strings are hard to remember. Try

**21*<tel. no.>#

to forward the phone, and

##21#

to cancel.

I think these might be fairly standard GSM codes, since they seem to
work for me many places on most phones. I'm not at all positive they
are universal, however, so your mileage may vary.

RTFM is never an appropriate comment.

Actually he did ask for help (a question) -- did you miss the "?",
perhaps jumping in mid-thread?

>He was just commenting on what he perceived to be Cingular's inferior

In that second part of his post, a vent that had nothing to do with
Cingular, it was clear that he hadn't RTFM; hence my suggestion. On
some phones, it's possible to shortcut the forwarding process. And with
just a bit more effort he would have found that standard GSM codes do
work on Cingular.

There's nothing offensive about RTFM.

No, I read it from the beginning. His question was whether he would be
charged for the SMS, not a request for help with call forwarding.

He was comparing Verizon's functionality with Cingular's. It seems
appropriate here. It didn't sound like a rant.

Like you helped me in saying RTFM ?
You think that was help ? With help like that, I don't need your help.

I've got your help hanging.

Verizon should be severely chastised for the crap they pull with their
handsets and disabling features.

Personally I'd rather hack the Verizon phone to restore the capability
they removed than lose coverage by going to Cingular, but if it's only
slightly worse then I guess it's no big deal. In my area, the San
Francisco Bay Area, the Cingular coverage is significantly poorer than
the Verizon coverage, but I've been in places such as South Florida
where Cingular coverage is excellent.

In fact Cingular has better coverage in general here in the San
Francisco Bay Area than any other carrier, Verizon included.

Verizon does this now too, they don't tell you your used minutes
verbally. If you have text messaging turned off, even free messages
don't get through. You can call 611 and get it verbally. I had to turn
off text messaging because I was getting billed for so many junk messages.

I'm sure that these messages are free, but you have to have text
messaging enabled on your account which subjects you to being billed for
junk messages.

With verizon you could check your use by seeing it in there free web
browser. I had all the extras turned off.

With cingular, I have the same. Everything turned off, but got the txt
message yesterday telling me of the usage. I don't how it can send me
that when I have it turned off. But as long as it's free then thats
fine. But If I start to get the other spam like others were talking
about then I'll call and make sure that won't happen from that point on.
And if that causes the mins used to not come to me then thats fine as well.

I wish Verizon would allow only text messages from Verizon, and no
others. I'm sure that they could, but they don't want to, as punishment
for not giving them text message revenue.

Verizon knows what's best for their customers; they are protecting us by
disabling functionality in their handsets that we might want to use for
purposes that they don't like.

I don't blame you for abandoning Verizon. I would love to change
carriers, but unfortunately the coverage problems with Cingular, Sprint,
and T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area don't allow it. Cingular is
improving, I've especially noticed improvement out in the east Bay, but
they are still far behind Verizon, especially in the rural areas and
greenbelt (due to AMPS). It'll be interesting to see the surveys in Jan
2009, once AMPS is turned off in some areas, and after Cingular has
another two years of working on their network, but for now Verizon out
here is like the oil companies with the law of supply and demand, "We
have all the supply, so we can demand whatever the $%#@ we want!" The
only positive is that among professionals it's rare to find a
non-Verizon customer out here, so most calls are mobile to mobile, so
people can get by with lower numbers of peak minutes. It's not just the
voice coverage, it's the wider high-speed data coverage.

Where are you located that Cingular is only slightly worse than Verizon?

I'm in San Luis Obispo. I found one area today that is crap. We have a
long grade the goes from atascadero to San Luis Obispo. There are lots
of high mountains in the area. (Radio Hill) Where all the radio and tv
towers are. Verizon has solid coverage where cingular drops twice in a
few mile stretch. This is my 1st area I've found that cingular lags in
coverage. None vs great with verizon. You can't find all the area's to
compare during the 15 day trial. But to be fair, there are areas that
are better with verizon. But this no coverage is not good news. This
area is known for major car wrecks. And with this being a Radio tower
hill, I would have though there would be no problem.

Well you can always keep a PagePlus CDMA phone activated for the areas
where Cingular has no coverage. That seems to be a popular way to retain
the Verizon coverage when switching to Cingular, at least in the Bay Area.

Funny you said that. I'm a pageplus seller for this area. But the lack
of local numbers has caused me to not go thru with selling there service.

There closest number they can give people in this area would be a Santa
Barbara number. And people in the area won't buy them as it would be a
long distance call.

Pageplus is looking into it. wish they would act on it more quickly.
They could make and I lots of money. There plans cost wise are the best.

Yeah, for landlines calling to the PagePlus phone, but I had a non-local
TDMA/AMPS prepaid for a while and it was no big deal. It was mainly for
urgent calls from my kids. If I had to call the number from a landline
it was pretty cheap with TalkLoop or OneSuite so I didn't worry about
it, but I usually called from my Verizon account where I rarely use even
1/2 of my monthly peak minutes.

PagePlus is almost the standard for low-cost prepaid with wide coverage
to supplement service for those with Cingular and T-Mobile that need the
coverage in places such as you have found that lack GSM coverage but
that have CDMA or AMPS coverage. The Bay Area is full of such gaps in
Cingular's coverage, though they appear to be working at filling them
in. It'll be interesting to see if the next round of surveys shows any
improvement for Cingular, as right now they are rated pretty poorly for
this area by all the independent surveys.
