Default OT - Steven Scharf

Need some help from you guys. Steven Sharf aka SMS has been plaguing certain
NG with crap posts for years now. I see that he used to post here in the
Cingular NG alot, then suddenly stopped. What did you guys do here that
finally drove him away?

Need your help, he has been personally attacking me and others for no
reason, need help to get rid of this pest. Any ideas are appreciated. Thank
you and sorry for the Off Topic post.

Setup a rule to delete his posts/Ignore. You never see his postings, who is
he then going to talk to ?

I have already done this, but what he is doing is repulsive. He copies and
pastes posts from others and then uses it to distort things to his own POV.
He also has taken to spoofing email addresses and post names. So just
ignoring him will not make him go away.

If no one talks to him then who is he going to talk to ? There is nothing
one can do.
He knows your going to reply and that's fuel for the fire.

They'll tell you how they did it if you can figure out how to
get rid of Navas... from all of usenet.

SMS is certainly opinionated, and I've gone a few rounds with him on certain
issues, but I'd hardly call his postings crap or a "plague."

Nothing. He stopped posting here voluntarily, ostensibly to get under John
Navas' skin, proclaiming that since Cingular is now AT&T, this NG is no
longer relevant (John formed this group years ago). However, he recently
mentioned his ISP dropped the Cingular group from their default newsserver,
so while Steven CAN post to this NG, it's a lot more work!

He has strong opinions about certain companies, and seems to spend a bit of
time "beating up" on those who blindly love a particular company and refuse
to acknowledge any of that company's faults (i.e. John Navas and
AT&T/Cingular) IF that company has somehow "wronged" him in the past
(Cingular, for example.) (Ironically, however, he seems to mirror the very
behavior he berates with companies HE likes, of course!)

From the discussions you've recently had with SMS on the Saturn NGs, (which
I only glossed over briefly), Steven seems to have been relatively cordial
to you, only taking you to task on your "Saturn can do no wrong" attitude.
Frankly, I don't find him a problem that needs correcting, as long as his
fervent posts are taken with the appropriate measure of salt...

In my experience, however, YOU seem to lay it on a little thick (but thin on
the factual side) for companies you enjoy/support, i.e. GM, OnStar, etc.

I never said that I was 100% correct on anything (I was wrongly informed
about OnStar and admitted it and thanked you for correcting me) but neither
have I initiated a personal attack on Steven as he has done me and others.
He has neither owned nor is knowledgeable about many of the products he
trolls about.

BTW - I will say that I have posted many a flaw and dislike about Saturns.
Its easy to be seen as a heretic by lovers or as a loyalist by haters.
Steven chooses to troll on what he can use, which is that the majority of my
posts are positive. He is quite imaginative and I am not blind. SMS has been
less than cordial, launching a personal attack on me without provocation,
that's why I struck back. And yes, he has been feeding on it, my bad.

Also - as opinionated as Navas can be, he has provided and backed up SOME
useful information in his life on this NG. FWIW, We owe him that.

That given, I asked about how to get rid of a troll. I read your replies and
kindly thank you very much.

Again, I've only glossed over the threads on the Saturn boards, but I
didn't see any "attacks"- do you have specific examples? Your posted
"evidence" are just google searches on Scharfs' name.

Perhaps, but that's hardly a unique crime on Usenet, is it? If discussions
were limited to only those who had first-hand definitive knowledge on
anything, Usenet would be a lot quieter! ;-)

If SMS is so wrong, then rally support from the other posters by rubbing
his nose in his errors via _documented_ corrections- that'll quiet a troll
down or at least turn the board against him.

Sure, and so has Steven Scharf- that's how Usenet works- you take the wheat
with the chaff, and hope there's more wheat.

Best of luck. Trolling has been a long time part of Usenet. Did you REALLY
think there was a simple answer to getting rid of one?

Good point, John Navas has quited down immensely.

That, my friend, is why god invented killfiles.

Right, but even a killfile isn't smart enough to nail all the
off topic flamewar posts in a thread he hijacks or one of his troll
postings generates.

If you also ignore/kill subthreads, it will prune off most of the
drivel.
