Starting January 20, 2008, AT&T is no longer offering unlimited data on
tethered PDA and Blackberries. This also applies to data cards. There will
be a soft cap of 5 gigabytes which will not incur overage charges if
exceeded. One could lose the data package if the cap is constantly
exceeded. Along with the cap on data card, AT&T is offering unlimited
connections to its Wi-FI hotspots without additional charge.

There is no contract for features. You use it from month to month. You can
choose not to renew if you do not like the month's offering. No one
complained when Cingular lowered the price of some data packages in 2006.
The only contracted data packages are those not attached to a voice plan.
They have early termination if you cancel them just as voice plans have.
The one which requires a contract is the $59.99 Data Connect. It cost
$79.99 on a month to month basis with a $5.00 discount if you have voice on
the same line.

At the same time AT&T is Splitting data from messages and dropping the price
of data only PDA to $30.00. Data only MEdia Net will cost $15.00. You can
add messaging packages if you choose. This saves about $5.00 per line if
you currently have Family Messaging and pay $19.99 for data only.

I don't think that would fly if contested. Customers sign term
contracts based on feature packages, and were those packages to change
significantly, I believe customers would have the right to cancel
without penalty, and might even be entitled to reimbursement for
equipment.

That said, I don't think this is an issue, since AT&T has consistently
grandfathered old feature packages indefinitely as long as they aren't
canceled. I'm still on the original MEdia Net Unlimited even though the
feature code has long been unavailable. I'm guessing this would only
apply to new signups.

You can go into OLAM and add or drop features at will. The contract is for
the voice services. Everything else is added at the request of the
customer. If there were a contract for features, there would be a penalty
for the customer dropping them or changing them to something else. It's
equivalent to adding HBO to your cable lineup.

I see they are increasing the price of iPhone data on Jan 21. Look at
the iPhone Enterprise announcement carefully.

I disagree, as I've already explained. Did you need to have the last
word? If so, now you can have it.
