For a PC running Windows you are quite right!

I learned from another poster that the Mac will charge it straight
away without any additional drivers with a standard cable which got me
going!

The V3 will charge from any standard, powered USB port. I can charge my
V3 from my laptop USB port running Linux without loading the comm
drivers. Its possible that the O/S can shut down a USB port and must
subsequently enable it. But no V3 specific drivers should be needed.

The USB hardware will 'negotiate' the available current with any device
when connected.

Excuse me for butting in, but I'm interrupt-driven.

The drivers evidently are needed in XP is my observation over 3
computers.

i appreciate the datapoint about a PC and linux--I was pondering that
myself but hadn't yet gotten round to tossing in a knoppix CD in and
seein on this particular box.
