Default Sony Ericsson W810i auto time zone and DST update issue

I recently traveled from one time zone to another and back again, and had to
shut the phone off and turn back on in order for the phone to update the
time. Same thing with the change with DST early this morning. In the past
all my phones have updated without having to do shut off/on. And yes, the
phone is set to automatically make these changes under both issues. Is that
an issue with the Sony Ericsson W810i or a SIM card issue? or just how the
phone operates??

If anyone knows, I appreciate the info because it's still in the 30 day
warranty and I can swap out for a new phone if need be.

Otherwise I LOVE this phone.

Thanks!
Jan

I had the same issue with my W810i, but it's a non-Cingular unbranded
phone so I don't really know if the Cingular phones have this problem.
It does have the latest software update from Sony Ericsson's site
though. I didn't restart the phone, but I just went in my Time & Date
settings and changed the DST to Normal (or Standard or whatever it was
called). I guess the phone doesn't do DST automatically, but it
should do Time Zones (according to the settings in the phone). This
was about 2 hours after DST went into effect.

Thanks for the response. Mine is a Cingular phone. It has a setting for both
time zones and DST to auto change on the phone and well, it didn't happen.
Perhaps I just didn't give it enough time. I was just used to my Nokia
updating within seconds after.

My son also got the W810i phone right after I did, so I called him after
posting the question here. His phone didn't auto change with the DST to
Normal automatically either. I emailed Sony Ericsson about it, so I'll let
you know if there is anything worth reporting.

I'll also check on the update for software at Sony Ericsson.

Thanks again for replying.

I suspect is was the system. My Razr was still showing DST here in
the Detroit area about 7 hours after the change. I set it manually to
the correct local time and then put it back on automatic and the time
reverted back to DST immediately. I finally just left it alone and an
hour or so later when I looked it had finally changed to the correct
time.

Just an FYI for anyone that has the same issue I did. I contacted Sony
Ericsson and got this response:

"Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.
There is nothing wrong with your phone. In order for the change to become
active, even if you have the auto change setup, you would have to power
cycle your phone, meaning to turn the phone off and then back on."

I'd just like to know what's the point of an auto setting when it's quicker
to change it manually than to cycle it off/on.

Whatever method you prefer, I guess- it's just that the phone only checks
the time at power up (probably it actually checks whenever it connects to
a phone network, so if you hit a "dead spot" it will reset the time when
it comes back into service.)

The practical upshot is that it sets itself when it's really important-
when you turn it on after landing at an airport in a different
timezone! ;-)

This varies by phone manf and is a known issue with SE -- some other
manfs don't require power cycling.

I personally think it's a matter of dumb design.

The issue here is the switch to/from Daylight Saving.

I think it's a dumb design too. I live on the edge of another time zone that
I do drive into frequently and it was nice not having to shut off the phone
to update. My old Nokia updated within seconds of crossing from one state
to another at the time zone line.

I'm annoyed with both issues, the time zone and DST. It is just dumb to have
to recycle it.

It's a great phone so far and I love all the features, so since I realize it
does this I can deal with it. But it sure will mess up people that aren't
aware it doesn't really do it automatically.

That is what made me notice that the SE didn't change - I was used to it
working properly with my previous Nokia phones.

I haven't checked, but is it possible to set up a different profile
with a different time zone? Would make it slightly easier to switch
zones I would think, if it's possible anyway.
