The 6340i was supported two ways--the original method was with a
separate plan that was for GAIT phones only. The later method was a GSM
plan but with the GAIT "features" added. Plus one unsupported method--
it could have been on a GSM-only plan with the TDMA/AMPS ability never
activated. Anyway, the lists that control which towers are used in what
order and which ones aren't used most likely is different with each
method. Nothing you could do about that--just be information.
> Quad Band, which they say should be better than my Gait phone.
Yeah right. Define "better". Better phone calls--doubtful. Better bells
and whistles--for sure--the 6126 is loaded. If you have a GAIT plan or
GAIT feature "they" would say anything to encourage you to move to a
GSM-only plan. Which you could do *if* you don't need the TDMA & analog
ability of the GAIT phone anymore--once you loose GAIT they won't let
you get it back.

The directory list is secondary. The sim's primary use is to identify
the GSM phone to the network and to store information as to the carrier
and tower usage like I mentioned above. The "wrong" list could cause the
phone to use a different tower (I.e. Cingular or ATTWS or even a roamer
carrier). Too late if you've returned the 6126 but one test that might
have helped was to put someone else's sim card in the phone AT THE SAME
PLACE where you were experiencing the problem to see if it still did it.
I did a search for the phone on phonescoop.com and didn't see anyone
reporting the problem. I did see a mention that at least one maybe two
firmware updates had been released for that model. New firmware might
help. Firmware update on the 6126 is done by the user via a pc connected
to the phone via a USB cable. Downloadable from nokiausa.
Again, I'd recommend trying a few other phones from the store or from
friends on Cingular. All you have to do is move the sim card to another
phone--when it powers up it will be using your card and number. It won't
permanently affect either directory list as long as you don't move any
numbers from sim to phone. If they all show problems then it's a problem
with your card OR plan. If not then it was the phone.
Good luck.
