Default Is this an AT&T network or phone problem

I just tried replacing my Nokia 6340i with a Nokia 6126 flip quad band GSM
phone. Everything I read about it looked good. However, it did not take long
to realize my voice was breaking up at the far end, while I was not having
any problem on the receiving end. I thought it might be due to a weak
signal, so I drove to an area in my neighborhood that had a very good
signal. I had the same problem. I called the cingular dealer where I bought
it, (about 15 miles away) and he said to bring it back for a replacement.
Before turning it in, I tried it at the store, and it worked fine. I brought
the second phone home, and had the same problem. After trying different
locations within 5 miles of my house, I found some areas that never worked
correctly as well as areas that had no problem. The signal strength did not
seem to be a factor. I called AT&T support to see if they could offer any
suggestions. They said I was the only one reporting this problem, so they
would not open a service order on it. I finally returned my new 6126, and
went back to my old 6340i. I don't know what to do next. The problem seems
to be a tower configuration that has a problem with a quad band GSM phone in
some areas. I have had cingular as a carrier for many years, but may have to
go to Verizon to get away from this problem. Does anyone have any words of
wisdom of what I should do next? I have not tried any other model phones on
the AT&T network. When I spoke with a Nokia 2nd level support person, he
said it
must be a network problem, and not a phone problem. Charles Ranheim

We have two 6340i's both on the original GAIT plan. When not needing
TDMA or AMPS one SIM is in a JAM pda phone (tri-band); the other is in a
Motorola quad band flip. No problems at all with the JAM. The Motorola
has broken up on the receiving end a few times over the last year (maybe
3 or 4 times)--oddly enough always within rock throwing distance of the
a tower. I've never really associated the problem to the GAIT plan or
the SIM card--just figured it was the phone.

Is yours on a GAIT plan or a GSM plan with the GAIT feature added? It
might make a difference as to which tower (Cingular or old ATT) picks
up.

I would suggest you try another brand of phone to rule out a problem
with the sim from the 6340i. Borrow one if need be.

The 6340i is a gait phone, and the new failing phone (6126) is a GSM only
Quad Band, which they say should be better than my Gait phone. I do not
understand how the sim is used, but are you saying if the sim was removed
from my old 6340i and placed in my new 6126 in order to keep my phone list,
it may be causing the problem?

The 6340i was supported two ways--the original method was with a
separate plan that was for GAIT phones only. The later method was a GSM
plan but with the GAIT "features" added. Plus one unsupported method--
it could have been on a GSM-only plan with the TDMA/AMPS ability never
activated. Anyway, the lists that control which towers are used in what
order and which ones aren't used most likely is different with each
method. Nothing you could do about that--just be information.

Yeah right. Define "better". Better phone calls--doubtful. Better bells
and whistles--for sure--the 6126 is loaded. If you have a GAIT plan or
GAIT feature "they" would say anything to encourage you to move to a
GSM-only plan. Which you could do *if* you don't need the TDMA & analog
ability of the GAIT phone anymore--once you loose GAIT they won't let
you get it back.

The directory list is secondary. The sim's primary use is to identify
the GSM phone to the network and to store information as to the carrier
and tower usage like I mentioned above. The "wrong" list could cause the
phone to use a different tower (I.e. Cingular or ATTWS or even a roamer
carrier). Too late if you've returned the 6126 but one test that might
have helped was to put someone else's sim card in the phone AT THE SAME
PLACE where you were experiencing the problem to see if it still did it.

I did a search for the phone on phonescoop.com and didn't see anyone
reporting the problem. I did see a mention that at least one maybe two
firmware updates had been released for that model. New firmware might
help. Firmware update on the 6126 is done by the user via a pc connected
to the phone via a USB cable. Downloadable from nokiausa.

Again, I'd recommend trying a few other phones from the store or from
friends on Cingular. All you have to do is move the sim card to another
phone--when it powers up it will be using your card and number. It won't
permanently affect either directory list as long as you don't move any
numbers from sim to phone. If they all show problems then it's a problem
with your card OR plan. If not then it was the phone.

Good luck.

And in this area, Cingular was "kind" enough to switch the 6340i to GSM
without bothering the user. Naturally, in the past, as long as the GSM extra
phone price was 19.95 for GAIT and 9.95 for GSM, they would refuse to do so
officially.
