Default AT&T Tilt coming?

I've been hearing about a replacement for the 8525 called the Tilt.
Several web articles that I have seen say that AT&T was expected to
have it on September 3rd. So far in Louisville, nobody knows anything
about it...at least in the AT&T stores that I've checked.

Anybody know anything about it?

Phonescoop has it as the "HTC Tilt 8925 / TyTN II (Kaiser)"

http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=1297

I wonder if it can the 8GB MicroSD card.

It's a much better product than the iPhone other than the limited memory.

LOL, it isn't even out yet. Any quirks will not be known till it is out in
the wild.

Moreover in order to win over any iPhone user or potential buyer that buyer
will need to put up with a smaller screen, a slide out keyboard (they are
not for everyone), half the number of LCD pixels, WinMob (ugh!),
non-capacitive stylus-based touch screen, and who knows what else...

Agreed- I'm as much of a WinMo supporter as thenext guy, but a PPC
Phone is certainy a geek/power user device I wouldn't inflict on my
good friends! ;-)

Having said that, I'm salivating over it- the owners' manual for the
T-Mo version was leaked onto the web a few days ago. I'd mucgh
rather buy a subsidized version from my carrier than a full priced
AT&T or unlocked model.

Rumor has itthe T-Mo version will support UMA (T-Mo@Home Wi-fi
calling.) I'd LOVE to have it before my next trip to Cancun in
January. Wi-Fi calling from the hotel's free WiFi will beat the hell
out of $1.49/min Mexican roaming on Telcel! ;-) (I can easily do
VoIP on my current PPC phone, but UMA would avoid messing with
setting up call forwarding to my VoIP number(s) before I leave.)

They are if you don't slide them out! ;-),

Oh, let's see, GPS capability, VoIP, doc editing, storage of e-mail
attachents, voice control, a library of over 10,000 available
software titles, and who knows what else! ;-)

Kidding aside, I agree with you- this thng will not appeal to iPhone
owners- different products for different markets. My advice to all
prospective WinMo phone owners is the first two things you need to
learn is where the power button is, and where the reset button is!
;-)

You lucky AT&T b*stards! ;-)

T-Mo has released it in Germany, announced it in the UK for late this
month, but hasn't so much as hinted as to a release date here. Maybe
they have to clear out the warehouse of the pathetic PPC-phone
("Wing") they sell currently.

I'm hoping for a T-Mo customized model with support for UMA (GSM over
WiFi) and T-Mo's upcoming non-standard 3G frequencies. (1700MHz
instead of 2100.)

The Tilt has only 256MB. Once the 8GB MicroSD cards come out next year
then it'll be a lot better than the iPhone, but for now with onlg 4GB,
it's limited as an MP3 player, especially if you start filling up the
MicroSD with map data for the GPS. The better camera, slide out
keyboard, HSDPA, and GPS probably have Apple a little worried.

Of storage, and that's shared bewtween the device's firmware and user
storage. I'd Be surprised if half is left for the user. My HTC
Wizard has 128MB of starage, and only 47MB are available to me after
a hard reset! The Wizard hogs the rest for it's own nefarious
purposes.

Maps for the entire US usually take about 1GB.

Either way, it's immaterial- unlike the iPhone, the storage is
removable. I can slip a half-dozen 4GB cards in one credit card
pocket in my wallet if need be. In reality, I still have 500MB free
on my Wiz's 2GB card now with a few dozen apps, a couple of full
device backup files, maps of several states, maybe 200 songs, a movie
or two, and two or three episodes each of "Coupling" and this
season's Doctor Who.

> The better camera, slide out keyboard, HSDPA, and GPS probably

Nahhh, different devices for different markets- the Tilt is an
enterprise (either definition: business or "starship") device that
will be sold to execs or geeks. The iPhone is a consumer device that
will sell rings around the Tilt, despite the iPhone's less overall
functionality .

I should start by saying that I'm relatively happy with my current
phone, the HTC Wizard (T-Mobile MDA / Cingular 8125.) However, it
has a few drawbacks that the Tilt (HTC TyTn II) seems to rectify.

1. It's 3G (so was the Cingular 8525 / HTC Tytn I)

2. It has GPS on board (I use an external GPS "puck" now- built-in
would be nicer.)

3. It runs WM6, which is an improvement over the WM5 the Wizard uses
(I'm running a "hacked" WM6 ROM image now that's quasi-stable.) WM6
supports HTML e-mail in the native messaging app, has OS support for
VoIP (certain to be hidden if not removed completely by AT&T and T-
Mo!) WM6 includes Voice Command, ($30 extra on WM5) which is the
single coolest phone app out there. Not just a voice dialer, it's a
speaker-independent voice control program for the OS and many apps.
"Start (name of program)" runs any program in the Start Menu or
Program folder hierarchy, "Play (name of artist, album, or playlist)
launches Media Player loaded with the requested selection. (A "look
Ma, no hands!" iPod- screw
flicking through CoverFlow, if I want Bob Dylan, I simply say "Play
Bob Dylan.")

4. The processor is MUCH faster than the Wizard's 200MHz OMAP (Again,
so was the 8525's- I'd probably be happy with an 8525 if/when the
official WM6 upgrade ever gets released!)

Having said all that, this is a phone for techs, nerds, and geeks, or
at the very least, the extremely patient! I've yet to see a WinMo
phone without a good number of quirks, bugs and a few "what the hell
were they thinking?" design decisions.

WinMo PPC phones are the ultimate mobile Swiss Army Knives- they are
a tool that can do just about anything, but they do it more awkwardly
than the real tool they're substituting for.

This would be, IMO, the penultimate mobile device. Look at the HTC
Shift for an example of where this is all heading- the Shift is a
full Vista PC with integrated phone and "instant on" PDA. It's just
too large at this point. When the Shift can be shoved into a case
the size of the Tilt, there's your ultimate mobile phone! ;-)

That's true, but really 8GB is sufficient for now. 16GB would be good if
you want to store a lot of video on the phone, but few people want to
watch video on such a small screen.

I do! I love the quality of video on my iPhone.

However, I am starting to literally hate Apple, after their draconian
position on third-party apps. So by next year I sure hope to be able to find
a phone with the same features as the iPhone from another maker. And for the
record, that means a screen that isn't smaller, that doesn't have less
pixels (no way will I go back to 320 x 240), and a Web browsing experience
at least as good as I have now.

That's a personal feeling. I get by just fine with 2GB, for some
16GB wouldn't be enough.

Depends how often you fly, I suppose. As I've expoused before, My
goal in a mobile device is laptop replacement. The ability to play
video on a flight is part of that goal.
I have no problem with small screens- 320x240 approximates VHS
resoultion, and we all put up with that for years!

Yeah, we did, but I always hated VHS because I knew something better
would come along. Widescreen rules! Finally.

Unlocked they run about $700- evn $399 is a decent deal (especially
considering AT&T is selling the previous model, the 8525, for $350
right now!)

Probably not -- what makes the iPhone is the great interface and
dazzling screen, not techie features.

First impressions of the 8925 Tilt: Neato! The tilting screen and the
big qwerty keyboard are impressive. It's a bit thinner in real life
than pictures would lead you to believe. It's only 30% thicker than
my tiny Krzr K1. It's still a big phone though.

Folks I talked to on landlines on the way home reported VERY crisp
audio on the speaker phone and were quite impressed with voice
quality. They weren't aware I was on a cell initially.

On my end, I was disappointed with the wimpiness and excessive buzzsaw
distortion of the tiny speakerphone speaker. My Krazr K1's
speakerphone has a much better speaker. However, with a phone like
this, the expectation is likely to use a bluetooth headset. RF seemed
fine through the iffy forest preserve that gives lesser phones
troubles.

I'll add more as I dig into it further.

Best Regards,

I was pretty amazed after I got my hands on this phone...not bad...but for
new 2 yr contract the phone is $199.99 then 100 rebate and for existing
customers its 289.98 then a 100 rebate....but you have to choose a data
plan....not a bad device. Sounds very good connected to my Z9 BT. I think my
wife will confiscate this phone soon. And use it for her own.

Where'd you find these prices? I got soaked for an additional $100 at
a corp AT&T store ($399 minus $100 rebate, new line on a family plan
w/ new data plan).

This is what I don't like about AT&T that they give new signup's the
discount but not there loyal people that want or need a upgrade. Verizon
always gave there users that were able to upgrade a big discount.

I'm two months away for my contract to end. I asked about the tilt. They
said I had to wait for 2 months. With Verizon you could renew at two months
before your due date. So If I stay with AT&T I'll just let it expire. Stop
service and get the "New customer discount" Roll over mins I have means
nothing, as If I had the need for them extra mins I would have used them by
now.
