have been revised showing an extra $5 charge if you wish to include
unlimited "mobile to mobile" messaging. This includes SMS and MMS.

In the U.S., the cost of voice calls is much less, and the carriers view
texting solely as a way to increase ARPU, and as a result texting is not
widely used because it's so expensive compared with making a call. In
Europe and Asia, texting is also popular because most people commute by
public transit, and it's considered rude to be making a voice call on
public transit. In the U.S., most people commute by car and texting is
difficult while driving.
In Europe and Asia, texting is very inexpensive. The carriers encourage
it because it reduces the load on the network.

Messaging is actually the more practical thing to do in many cases, such
as communicating in a place where you can't talk on the phone (e.g.,
movie theater, business conference), when text is of value to the
recipient (e.g., URL), can be used for services (e.g., Google searches),
broadcast to multiple recipients, to save time (especially with a
template), when you don't want to get into a conversation with the other
person, can be reviewed and edited before sending, can be stored
indefinitely or forwarded, when email is desired (i.e., SMS-to-email
gateway), hearing-impaired locations and/or callers, on and on.

already pointed out, Cingular recently introduced a $5 add-on unlimited
in-network texting package, but I believe it can only be added on to

With all your outstanding knowledge, I would venture to say that you are
smart enough to enter an alternate zip code to see features in a particular
area. As a Cingular (with various other names) customer for over 10 years, I
know that their services and offers change from geographic location to
geographic location. For this reason, my original reply to your post
indicated in "my area". Andy S seems to be in an area offering the same as
mine (South Texas). As for needing evidence, just search Cingular's offers
in different areas. The United States is much larger than the Bay area.

It's unlimited in-network text messaging for $5 more than your regular
text bundle, so it's $10 per month. However in some markets they have
cut that to $5, the same price as 200 text messages without unlimited
in-network. Verizon has no $5 message plan at all.
Comparing the four major carrier's text messaging rates:
Verizon gets you a lot more messages than AT&T at each price point, but
Verizon lacks a $5 message plan. Sprint has the best deal for unlimited
text messaging, in and out of network, at only $10, while T-Mobile gives
you the most for a $5 upcharge.
I bet that AT&T will soon correct the disparity in their text messaging
rates for the higher number of out-of-network message plans, unless
Verizon decides to raise their own rates.

The screencap you posted clearly states "Unlimited Texting starting at
$9.99 TO OVER 60 MILLION CINGULAR CUSTOMERS" (emphasis mine.) The next
line says "Unlimited mobile-to-mobile messaging..."
That's the unlimited mobile-to-mobile (Cingular-to-Cingular) plan I
referred to. It's unlimited to other Cingular phones only. It's not
"unlimited texting" anymore than unlimited M2M is "unlimited calling."

Ah, now I see it.
It's not on their web site, and an insert in my most recent bill that
was promoting their new text messaging plans, no mention was made of a
$5 plan. But I found a press release that mentioned it. I guess that
they don't want to talk about the $5 plan much, since for most people
250 messages a month is more than enough.

Nor does Verizon. Sprint and T-Mobile do offer such plans. Practically
speaking, Verizon's 5000 out-of-network/unlimited in-network for $20,
and AT&T's 3000/unlimited for $25 is as good as unlimited for most people.

Frankly, for me, the 50 texts/month I used to get for free with T-Mo up
until three years ago were as good as unlimited for me! ;-)

I agree. When text messages were really cheap for pay-as-you-go I'd use
maybe 20-30 month, mainly for flight updates from airlines. I simply
switched to receiving a call from the airline instead. It works better
because when I'm roaming off of Verizon the text message delivery is
spotty. I used to get my text messages about the flight after I landed
at SFO.
I was getting so many junk text messages that I had Verizon disable text
messaging completely. They went from getting $1-3 per month in extra
revenue from me, to getting $0, but I guess that they figured that into
their calculations when they decided to push people to sign up for text
messaging plans by raising the prices of pay-as-you-go.
I'd love to know who needs 5000 text messages per month, other than
teenagers sending sweet nothings to their boyfriends/girlfriends.
I hear ya on the junk. I thought cingular turned it off on day one. I
got 3 the 2nd day. Called and found out they had not. Cost me 30 cents.
Next time I'll call and make sure. And record it.
When verizon Increased there price I was able to get out of paying the
ETF... I was in the pay per you go plan. When I called to get out of
contract, the CS rep said your such a great customer that verizon wants
to give you a 100 per month for free. I said no thanks. I'm gone.
The following week when I called to find out when the end of the billing
cycle was, the CS rep asked me why I was going to leave. After a few
mins the guy tells me that I have a 100 text plan and I was not on the
pay as you use plan. Thus not being able to leave without the ETF being
paid. I countered his remark with, If I'm in a plan, then why was I
charged for 4 or 5 text messages last week that verizon charged me on my
bill. I caught the company pulling shady crap.
Next time they should check there billing statements before saying I had
a free plan for months before telling me If I leave early I'm going to
have to pay there ETF...
And I'm waiting for the 41 cents they owe me.

I'd love to know how many customers, if any, actually sign up for
anything more than the $10 messaging plan on Sprint, T-Mobile, and
Verizon, or more than the $15 plan on AT&T Wireless.

For some (not all) subscribers this is effectively unlimited messaging.
I nonetheless stand corrected that Cingular (AT&T) is now using "Mobile
to Mobile [M2M] Messaging" as a term of art to mean messaging only to
other Cingular (AT&T) subscribers, not subscribers of other carriers.
I had missed that -- thanks. I personally think it's misleading, fine
print notwithstanding, and grounds for complaint.
The closest Cingular (AT&T) comes to truly unlimited messaging is
Messaging Extreme - 3000 Messages at $20/month.
p.s. Feel free to clarify my posts if you must, but skip the childish
