Default V3 RAZR RF Noise

I have an interesting problem. My V3 periodically transmits some signal
that interferes with a small portable radio that I carry*. It occurs
when it (the phone) is not in use. I just hear a buzzing noise for a few
seconds every 10 to 20 minutes or so. I'm guessing that its the phone
negotiating with the nearest cell site.

My question is: Why doesn't the phone produce this kind of RF
interference when I'm making a call? Is there something peculiar about
the control channel it (GSM) uses?

*The radio is an Aiwa, a tiny, cheap FM radio with ear buds. Some time
ago, a friend of mine (a dancer at a local strip club) and I observed
that this radio also picks up interference from police radios, making it
an excellent 'sniffer' for detecting imminent undercover raids. ;-)

Welcome to GSM. Every stinkin GSM phone I've had does this if you're
too near baby monitors, powered computer speakers, clock radios, etc.
It's awfully annoying and I agree with you, this sort of shit shouldnt
be happening on an FCC class C device.

You'll also notice that the noise gets rather constant ahead of call
reception, so you can pretend to be psychic about incoming calls...

Best Regards,
