I've got news for you! It takes more than the handset! Where are the
4G towers? Do they have the backhaul bandwidth necessary to handle 4G?

You think they need to build new towers for 4G?! It's swapping out some
plug-in cards, that's all. They've been planning for the backhaul for 4G
for years, it's in place or being installed now.

It's more a question of balancing the capacity of each technology during
the transition. Carriers have a lot of experience with doing that--look
at the AT&T Wireless TDMA/AMPS to GSM transition (okay, maybe that's an
example of how _NOT_ to manage a transition).

Whats a "4G" tower? They add another rack into existing cell sites. As
far as backhaul they are very ambitiously connecting sites with fiber. I
am in a small market and they just ran fiber to the 3 sites nearest me
in the past few months. If own the resident fanboi actually realized
the incredible differences between the various carriers...

There is more dark fiber in the ground (and in the air) in the US than
anyone can count. Hint: power transmission lines have contained fiber in
the core of the lines for decades.

There's a pile of fiber between utility central offices, but not nearly
so much between there and where you might need to put cell towers. And
urban or suburban fiber local loop installation is really expensive on
a per-mile basis compared to long-haul fiber, which can follow railway
or freeway or power line right-of-ways for most of the mileage. There's
a reason why a lot of people can't to better than DSL for home Internet
service.
