To Make a call while driving, I want to push a button, say a name, have the
phone dial for me.
I don't want to open or even look at the phone. ( I'm driving.)
Currently I do this on the V551, but am getting a new phone.

Actually Scott, it's not that clear at all. The voice dial on Nokia where
you set tags is quite different from Voice Command (which can also do voice
dialing) on the 8x25 phones where you don't have to set up specific voice
tags. The 8x25 actually has a built in voice dialer or you can install the
Microsoft version which gives you voice command for dialing or to run
various applications (i.e. address book, system status, media player, etc).
On some voice command systems you must train it to a specific user; while on
others it's speaker independent. Some work with Bluetooth headsets; others
don't. Systems/implementations also vary in terms of how many phone numbers
can be controlled with voice command. Some are limited; others less so.
Some are more sensitive than others to ambient noise.
If the OP simply wants to know which phones have voice dial capability, that
information is available on the Cingular website.

Actually the original question wasn't clear at all. He appears to be
asking about phones which have their own voice dialing but may have
been talking about something similar.

Consider the V3xx, which has excellent voice dialing capability that
doesn't have to be trained or stored. I've found it remarkably good at
finding the correct name from my speech. When it's uncertain, it gives
you possible candidates in order. Also has digit dialing by voice
command. And works over Bluetooth. Highly recommended.

The latest RAZR, the V3xx, supports voice command dialing without voice
tags, and for me works as well or even better than voice tag systems
like the one in the V551.

My 8525 'Voice Speed Dial' requires I dictate a sound byte to match
individual phone numbers.

Microsoft Voice Command. It runs $40 but is apparently included in WM6,
based on the "leaked" pre-released versions. You might want to wait and
see if Cingular offers a WM6 update for your device before spending any
money just for MSVC.

Thanks. I've learned over the years to have a pretty thick skin, and
not sweat the rantings of the few that delight in being nasty and
disruptive. (Sadly the Internet tends to bring out the worst in some
people who delight in getting away with conduct that would never fly in
the real world.) I get lots of nice responses as well, many by private
email in order to avoid triggering more flaming.

My Cingular 'commercial' rep tells me the policy is a 'refresh' not an
'upgrade' (if he has the terms correct) supposedly for the 8525 and
Blackjack. It may be available for others but that's the only platforms I
design for at present. I have a new application about to be released that
will run on a Blackjack. I was considering waiting until WM6 was released.
An upgrade, as defined by him, means you have to trade-in your device for a
new device. A refresh is a microcode refresh done in a Cingular tech center
to your existing device; price not quoted. Time frame through editing,
porting, documentation, testing and delivery will probably be Q3, 2007.

Semantics aside, for WinMobile devices it's generally done by software
download. You get the new ROM image for the phone, run an included
utility on your PC that installs it to the connected phone.

From my experimentation with WM6 (I've tried a hacked "pre-release"
version floating around the web, but went back to stock WM5 software for
stability reasons) every WM5-compatible program ran on WM6.
WM6 seems to be mostly a "facelift" release- prettier icons and HTML-e-
mail support. Smartphones (like the Blackjack) will get the ability to
edit Office documents (like PPCs can now.) It's certainly not an x.0
upgrade compared to past PPC OS upgrades. Probably MS wants to play it
like it's a major update considering the hype iPhone is going to
generate. 6.0 will sound better than 5.1 or 5.2 or "5.0 SE."

Fair enough- that's "Cingular-speak" generally PPC vendors refer to a new
OS or patch as a "ROM upgrade."

Interesting. The Cingular 8125 has received one "refresh" via download
already, from the original WM5 release to the AKU2 release last fall. I
wonder why Cingular feels this update needs to be performed by them
(except, perhaps, to control distribution- once it hits the web, everyone
could reflash their device, bypassing Cingular and their ability to
charge for it.)
