Ericsson W580i question

I want to have my phone ring in the earbuds whenever I have them
connected. I keep the phone in a holder clipped to the outside of a
pants pocket, so it's too far away to hear the ring when I'm wearing the
'buds (which I sometimes do even when no music is playing), and too well
isolated for me to feel the vibration.

I have been told by both AT&T and Sony-Ericsson that what I want to do
is impossible. Pardon my skepticism, but from previous interactions with
both of them, I don't have a lot of faith that they know what they're
talking about.

It seems that an inability to hear the ringtone in the earbuds is such a
serious failure that it couldn't really be the only way the phone works.

Is there some way to get the phone to do what I want?
