Vodafone 802SE unlock question

My girlfriend just gave me the 802SE that she was using when she was in
Japan. I was hoping to unlock the phone so that I could try it out with my
personal plan. Is there any way I could do this myself? What software
would I need?

Also, is there any benefit in changing the phone (from a firmware
perspective) into a Z800/V800?
