Default BT50 and BT51 batteries

I have been using Motorola W755 phone which shipped with a BT51 battery.
I just received a W766 phone and it arrived with a BT50 battery.

I did a quick google search and it leads me to believe that these
batteries are interchangable, but the BT51 has higher capacity.

So I am thinking that I should just use BT51 batteries. Why did the
newer phone ship with a less capable battery? Was Motorola just trying
to save a few pennies?

You might check if an older high capacity battery still has a higher
capacity than the "inferior" new battery.
You might be better off with the new one.

My first thought is that they matched the battery to the needs of the
phone.

Agree. Also to the OP: one, or both of your batteries may be non-Motorola
fakes. The label on the outside may be totally arbitrary as the two models
are physically interchangeable. I have taken to using a small digital
scale to compare "like" cells and have, not surprisingly found, that a
battery labelled as higher capacity may actually weigh _less_; and vice
versa.

What are the needs of the phone? I am most interested in the needs of
the W766, since I am using one now.

I hope that you don't put a lot of effort into researching this question.
I am a selfish *******, so I am more interested in my own needs. To wit:
I need my battery to deliver as much power as possible.

I have a Motorola W385 that came with a BT50 battery. My battery isn't
keeping a charge very well anymore and I need to buy a new one, and with
the extra 100 mAH on the BT51, I'm pretty sure that'll extend my battery
life a little bit between charges. But I don't want to shell out the
money for a new battery and find out that it doesn't fit, or that the
connectors are on the wrong side, or something like that.

Your best bet would be to ask Motorola! Second best would be the dealer
that sold you the phone. I think Motorola has a customer service
phone line and that would be a good place to start
