What program (other than Google Mail) can be used to enter and
transfer a Contact database to a Motorola Atrix?
I have a database of contacts in my Palm software (v. 4x) that I would
like to have available on my new phone (Atrix). Obviously, I would
prefer to be able to simply transfer the Palm data; but, failing that,
I could manually re-type the database. What program can I do this in
so as to make the transfer as seamless as possible?
Many thanks.

Bob

Try "Motorola Phone Tools". The tools let you copy your contacts file
from your computer to your phone and vice versa. You CAN enter and edit
contacts on your phone but it's a real PITA compared with using your
computer. On my phone, a RAZR V3m, to get a "C" I have to press the
2-ABC key and then "scroll" to get to the C. Some of the more expensive
phones offer a miniature QWERTY keyboard but typing on it can be a bit
of a challenge if you have big fingers!

Unfortunately, "Motorola Phone Tools" does not work with Android
phones (which most, of not all, of the newer smartphones from Motorola
are run on).
Does anyone have any other ideas, or is the bond between Android and
Google simply too strong to allow alternatives. It's as bad as the
tie between the iPhone and Apple's iTunes.

Well, I'm glad I hung on to my old Motorola RAZR V3m. It is supported
by Motorola Phone Tools. Trying to edit your contacts without such a
tool would be a real drag!
Does Google let you edit your contacts, appointments, memos, etc, and
then load the updated data into your phone? Does Google keep your
contacts, etc, private?

Yes, I had a RAZR before and it finally suffered irreversible senility
and I was forced to buy something new. AT&T offered me a Nokia flip
phone (under the "insurance" plan) but it wa a piece of plastic
compared to the RAZR, which was a fine phone.
I found today, through another List, a way, although a bit complex, to
load the contacts directly from my Palm Tungsten C to the Motorola
Atrix. There are two programs, one CompanionLink (for your PC) and
Deja-Office (for the Android phone) which allows one to transfer the
contacts first from PC to CompanionLink and then to Deja-Office. See
<www.companionlink.com>. You can download a free 14-day trial (full)
version, and then, if it works for you, it costs $49.95. It seems to
be worth it. Deja-Office is free, in the Android Market via the
phone.

The Google applications seem more primitive but they do sync to the
phone. I am not sure about the privacy.

Can you save as a PIM and then restore to the other phone?
You might be able to use Outlook or Outlook express to convert formats.
