We all knew this would happen, the mass exodus of Android users to the
iPhone has begun. Everyone hated the Android platform from the very
beginning, but now we can see by how much. Almost 44% will leave the
platform in the coming weeks, so it's going to get interesting as the
Android fades to black.

FORTUNE MAGAZINE

By ELIZABETH WOYKE
When Verizon Wireless announced it would offer a version of Apple¹s
iPhone following years of anticipation, AT&T seemed an obvious loser.
Since Verizon¹s iPhone launch will end AT&T¹s more than three-year reign
as the iPhone¹s exclusive provider in the U.S., it was obvious that the
move would affect AT&T¹s business.
Now it looks like the Verizon iPhone may be a bigger threat to Motorola
and its Droid phones than AT&T.
The data suggests that current Verizon subscribers are ditching their
Droid phones in favor of the iPhone while AT&T customers take longer to
debate a possible switch. AT&T subscribers may be waiting to see how
Verizon¹s network handles the influx of iPhone users, says Ganot. AT&T
users may also want to see how Apple upgrades the iPhone this summer and
whether that refreshed device will be available on Verizon or just AT&T.
The different on-sale dates Verizon set for subscribers versus
non-subscribers probably affected trade-in times, as well, by pushing
Verizon users to make an early decision about the iPhone.
Droid phones fetch less money on Gazelle, usually between $120 and $220,
depending on the model. That means Verizon customers who are trading in
Droids and aren¹t yet eligible for a new Verizon phone are also paying
quite a bit for their iPhones‹anywhere from $430 to $530, based on the
device¹s full retail price.
Other Droid manufacturers may also take a hit from the Verizon iPhone.
Gazelle has been specifically tracking Motorola Droid trade-ins but says
that Droid makers like HTC appear to be vulnerable to the same trend.

"Google today in its fourth-quarter earnings call confirmed Andy Rubin's
statement in December that some 300,000 Android devices are being activated

That's iPads, iPods, and AppleTV lumped in with iPhones.
The Android activations are almost entirely phones.

And many/some are not very smartphones. That's part of why you can't
make an intelligent comparison to the activations done to determine
anything much.
The only thing you can tell is that Android is doing fine with sales, if
not profit, compared to iOS.

'almost entirely' means they're including android tablets too. they
even say 'android devices' not phones.

Fair would be you fanbois remembering your claims of how Android tablet
sales are only channel sales, and not trying to count them into activations
after that.

It is fair to count the very few Android tablet activations...
Hey, I see you're having reading problems again. I know dates can be a
pesky thing, but can you at least post articles that are this year?

It is? How many activations is that, Lloyd? Do vendors activate them
before the customers buy them?

Those were things you would have preferred not to be reminded of?

but at that rate, they'll never catch up with Apple's iOS platform.
Basically, the Android era ends Tonight at 3am Eastern time. Nobody in
their right mind will want an Android when they can get the real article
for the same or less price.

Android doesn't make any profit, it's a money losing operation for
Google, plus the Android has been fading out since GoogleTV, Android
Tablets failed in the market place.
So basically all they have left is some poorly made phones with a sea of
poorly made Apps. 44% of Android users start switching to the iPhone
tonight. So it's going to be an excellent night for everyone.

Unless someone screwed up Big Time, shipments should correlate with
sales. If someone DID screw up Big Time, we will see "Fire Sales" on
Android Phones.

weird that there's a verizon for android users to flock to given that
you said verizon would fade away and go out of business from all their
users going over to at&t to get the iphone. that and everyone using
voip instead of cellular on all those open wifi points.

Others have talked about the wide range of Android 'smartphones'. Some
very nice, some less powerful and useful than the discontinued 3G
iPhones. Since you read here, you should remember some of them.

On the OS, unlimited since its free!
But overall, the reports are that Apple is making the bulk of the
profits in the touch market. You've seen links to that effect here.

by some, you mean kdt. and yes, there are lower powered phones. that
doesn't make them featurephones or less than smartphones.

yeah, kdt just linked to one. it's average profit per phone. not the
same thing.

yep, and that has happen faster than even i expected, in 10 years most

you're trying to say that you never said verizon would fade away month
by month because of the iphone?
is this going to be like where you denied claiming buying multiple 8gb
iphones, including one for your wife, then you said that you never
said that, and didn't have a wife, but then i posted links to you
saying all those things, then you said those were incorrect links,

nope, i likely said verizon would harmed by not getting the iphone
contract, which turned out to be true, but i never said they would fade
away or disappear.

i still have 2 iphones, i've never had a wife, so you are clearly making
up nonsense. please post "any" link where i said i had a wife, good luck

this one was actually a deliberate whack interpretation for fun (see
below) since you said you were thinking the same thing as tinman-
giving 8gb to wife and buying a bigger one. http://groups.google.com/group/comp....13200607df7cfa
any interpretation though- you had a wife, or you had a 8gb, aren't
true. ;D [this all started with your 'inconsistent' statements
regarding how many, and what size, iphones you had bought].

don't try to leave wiggle room with the '/ip' now (i suspect you're
trying to leave wiggle room by saying a lot of the ip calls are going
over cellular)- but you didn't say voice traffic would be over wifi /
ip - you said that skype and other voip providers would 'wipe the
slate clean of the cell vendors' (and maybe said the ip providers
would be going out of business). however, cell providers continue to
gain more and more subscribers, so i'm not sure how you think it's
happening faster than you expected.

yes, and that turned out to be true... thanks for proving it.

yes, and that turned out to be true... it was tinman who said that, not
me... thanks for proving i was correct... your memory seems faulty, i
remember everything.

wifi / ip is the same thing in this instance, you can't have a wifi
connection without a valid ip connection.
yes, and skype, truphone and now facetime is killing off cell voice
services, so i was correct, it just happened faster than anyone thought.
they are gaining "data" subscribers, but people who need "voice" are
dropping like a rock.
Everyone underestimated the fact that most Verizon customers would not
move to AT&T simply to get an iPhone. Verizon continued to have more net
additions than AT&T in almost every quarter since the iPhone was
introduced. Of course if Verizon had had the iPhone they would have had
even more net additions. But for most Verizon customers, even if they
really wanted an iPhone, the Android alternatives were good enough.
Now that the Verizon customers that have the original Android phones are
eligible for discounted new phones, it's likely that many will opt for
the Verizon iPhone versus another Android model, but many have gotten
used to Android and will stick with it.
Now AT&T is in a panic, re-introducing (kind-of) an unlimited data plan
for the iPhone. But Verizon (apparently) offers unlimited data _with_
tethering at no extra cost, you only pay extra if you want the hotspot
capability.
You asked what are the profits for the manufacturers, The first chart
with the bit,ly link shows the profit per manufacturer (vertical) and
the number of phones sold (horizontal).
The second article shows that Apple + RIM + Nokia make 87% of the cell
phone industry profits.

Actually it's not, HTC already pays *Microsoft* a patent license fee
for each Android phone that ships.
