anyway to turn OFF the cell network in a Nokia "UMA" phone?
I've got a Nokia 6301 which, in combination with the t-Mobile account,
has the option of making calls over an internet WIFI connection.
(This uses what they call "UMA", aka Unlicensed Mobile Access).
It's a great little feature, letting you, for example, use
the phone in the back factory sub basement which doesn't
have a cellular signal but does... have an internet connection
with WIFI.
Now what I'd like to do is completely turn OFF the cellular
network option. Why? Because if I'm in, say, Canada, I do
NOT want the phone registering locally as that can cause
all sorts of grief (read expense) if people try calling me.
Note that this charge is both if I answer... and in many
cases also gets incurred if I bounce the call back to
the US based v-mail.
So I'd rather not have any cellular contact, but rely,
instead, on just the WIFI.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
(The Nokias are triband, thus will "work" in Canada - which
shares channels with the US, and will similarly work
in many international locations).

Isn't UMA including seamless handovers among WiFi and GSM/3G?

With the Nokia N95 I can use the profile "offline" so it doesn't use
GSM/3G but WiFi yet is possible.

Doesn't seem to work that way... If I go to "manual", it'll
come back at me with a list of local cellular networks.
If I choose one then that's what I get. If I don't choose
any then I get bumped back to "auto".
Hmmm... maybe if I force it to t-mobile in the US and
leave it that way? hmmm....
I'm not too worried about the battery since I'll only
turn the phone on when I'm in a WIFI'ed area and
planning to make calls.

Ah, yes. I just tried this on my Nokia 6700c and it works
the same way. Motorola phones work differently.

Three ideas, independent of each other:
1) before you leave, get T-Mobile to forward *all* incoming calls
to voicemail. Even if the phone is registered locally in Canada,
*no* calls will try to ring your phone; yet you'll be able to make
outgoing calls through whatever partner you're roaming with; OR:
2) before you leave, get T-Mobile to TURN OFF all forwarding,
and to turn off voicemail. Incoming calls will ring your phone,
you can answer or not, as you prefer, based on displayed Call-ID,
but there should be no air-time or roaming charges *unless* you
answer the call (AFAIK); OR:
3) if you can, set up the frequency to the European 900/1800 setting
that nothing in Canada uses (not all phones allow such a manoeuvre),
and you'll never get registered with any local Canadian carrier.
No guarantees, of course, on any of the above, nor on T-Mobile's
CC reps' abilities correctly to carry out requests of types 1) or 2).

I don't think you need T-Mobile to do this, you should be able to
forward all calls yourself. I do this with AT&T all the time.

There's no need to turn off voicemail, you just need T-Mobile
to make it so that "Clear all diverts" actually clears all
diverts (rather than restoring the not-available divert to
the voicemail number). When you want the voicemail divert
back you can add it back yourself. I've had AT&T do that for
me as well.

Ah, this is perfect. However, while all my Motorola phones support
this, my new Nokia does not. Maybe his does?

Nokia sells phones preset at different frequencies for different
markets, AFAIK. Some of them offer tri-band, which means they will work
in the US as well as Europe. Dualband phones can only work on
European/non American networks.
There's no way to change this, the most you can do is switch between
GSM/UMTS(3G).

That would sort of defeat the purpose of a "flight mode" wouldn't it?
Every one of my devices with a flight mode shuts down all radios (cell, BT,
and WiFi) when it's selected. Anything else would be a pretty serious
bug!

Not necessarily.
Cellular belches RF regularly.
Not so Wi-Fi (unless set to Ad Hoc mode).
I have seen devices that left Wi-Fi enabled in Flight Mode.

Have T-Mobile turn off roaming.
Your phone will still try to register,
but the foreign network will reject it.

Yeah, I thought that flight mode was for fast loading times, or something.
So I put it on that all the time, battery live was way longer too.
Until I discovered that no-one could phone me anymore ;o)

That sounds like a pretty awful design since it would prevent you from
using the device on wifi enabled flights.
A better design is for flight mode to shut down all radios, but allow
you to turn individual radios back on again.
This is the approach Windows Mobile and iPhone take, but I can't speak
to Nokia or others.
