Default Free Space on Memory Cards in N95

I have had my N95 for just over a year. I put a 2GB microSD card into
from day one. Recently I was running out of space, and decided to go
through all the photos and movie clips and delete those that I no
longer wanted. I did this on my Apple PowerBook using a memory card
reader. Before I started the phone memory status application reported
that I had something like 147MB free. I deleted approximately 1GB
worth of photos and video clips from the card using the Mac and then
put the card back into the phone. It still reported that there was
147MB free, despite not being able to navigate to and find all the
files I had deleted. That was on last Saturday evening, and today I
check again, and it says I have 1003MB free.

The questions I have is:

Why did the phone take several days to work out that the card have
more free space?

Is there something I need to do when deleting files using a computer,
to ensure that the N95 has an up-to-date status more or less straight
away?

Cheers

It may be there is a temporary store onboard to allow for restoring files
deleted in error.

Don't know, sorry.

Don't think that can be the case, because I deleted the files whilst
the card was inserted into a computer, and I emptied the trash too.
