Default N86 crap battery life?

I am very pleased with my N86 apart from the fact that the battery goes flat
in less than half a day in normal use.

Is this a known problem?

Well- wifi,Bluetooth,3G and GPS drain the battery if kept on, so for
starters, turn them off when not in use.

Thank you.

I do suspect the wi-fi is a possible culprit (I keep Bluetooth off when I'm
not using it - problem is that I use that a lot with my earpiece)

Thank you.

That was what I got from my N95 so that is what I'm aiming at with the new
one.

If you do- make sure you keep your bluetooth in 'hidden' mode.
Paired devices like your earpiece or laptop or phones belonging to known
people will still be able to connect, but unknown/untrusted bluetooth
devices won't be able to do so.
There are various bluetooth hacks and mobile viruses that spread by
sending bluetooth messages, so it's always best to keep it hidden when
in use, and turned off at other times.

I also changed from a N95. With the N86 sometimes the battery seems to
last several days but other times less than a day. Now summer is over I
will turn the screen brightness down and see if that makes much difference.

I went on holiday to the Gower in Wales a couple of weeks ago. My
e71 usually runs for about 4 or 5 days on one charge. On the Gower -
with marginal or no coverage (2G or 3G) - it was shutting down after
24 hours.

I believe when there is little or no signal the phone uses a lot more
power to try and find a connection/stay connected. I switch to off-line
mode for long underground journeys etc.

yes, this happens with most phones. Another tip- if you're roaming on a
network with no 3G coverage (or your operator does not have 3G at all,
like mine) change the network settings to GSM only, instead of dual
mode. Otherwise when the GSM signal is unavailable, the phone will try
to locate a 3G signal and waste battery in the process.

Yes.
I always switch to GSM when phone is used only as this.
if i use it as modem or as internet radio client i switch over only
to UMTS.
You can use the energy saver mode by pressing power button once and
choose menu item on bottom "energy Save".

Battery is indeed empty after 2 days medium usage....

regards.

No but I use the London underground from time to time.

Hope whatever dig holes in our lawn from time to time do not have N86s!

I've apparently fixed it, following advice to switch off any superfluous
processes, such as being visible to non-paired devices and the periodic
scanning for available WLAN connections.

I now get a working day's use out of it but will keep looking for further
tips here.

Thanks to all who replied.

I had heard that phones boost their signal to grab/amplify whatever weak
signal is available. too.

Whats wrong with Nseries? It depends on how much you use the phone and
if you keep wifi/GPS always on, as I mentioned earlier.
The N73 for example had awesome battery life-went 3 days with heavy
calling, internet usage and photography.
