Nokia 7900 and gmail

Hi,

One of my Nokia phones is a Nokia 7900, and I wanted to install
Google's gmail application on the phone. I connected to their website
www.gmail.com/app and downloaded to proposed application. It installs
fine, but when I try to connect (I enter user name and password), the
application stays on the "Charging..." screen forever, but without
charging the actual contents of my inbox.

It seems that the application itself works fine (menus and everything
are displayed correctly), but the problem seems to be in the
connection area.

I tried to connect to the internet by other means (i.e. the phone's
internet browser), and that works just fine. The applications are
using the same access point (I think).

Is there anyone out there that have experienced a similar problem?
Do you know of any working solutions?
