It is good, but the N79 and N97 have the same radio connectivity and the N97
Mini only lacks FM transmit. Several other Nokia phones have FM transmit
including a spare 6300 I have here.
The main improvements you DO get are: -

HOWEVER as I say Nokia have failed as regards time to market and others have
got phones with similar spec on sale sooner. IMO they are also over-priced
SIM free, although Voda for instance will provide it free with quite a nice
package for £25 per month, which IS competitive

I found the signal from the FM transmitter in my N85 to be too weak to
be of much use. It was too weak for my in-car radio to pick up when
auto-scanning through the frequency the N85 was transmitting on.

How do you say they are similar specced? The camera alone is the biggest
improvement, with HD video recording, at 12mp, with a sensor that's
bigger than consumer grade digital cameras. You may say bigger is not
better, but there's reviews comparing the N8 to a Canon DSLR, and the
photos it takes can give the DSLR a run for its money.
USB host is another unique feature - you can connect a pendrive and
directly copy/run files from it.
And Dolby Digital surround sound output - tell me which phone currently
does that?
These features may not be important to you, but they do add to the
sticker price, and it is being marketed as the best cameraphone on the
market to date.
For those who don't need a high end camera, Nokia's already launched the
C7, with identical specs but 8mp camera, no xenon, no HDMI out, no
dolby. I believe you should compare THAT with the phones you mentioned
previously.

Just install LCG Jukebox. however , i encountered the same probs before ,
but after installation and using Jukebox , it seems to me that the program
rises the transmitpower to
higher level , so the received signals will be much better.just switch on
Transmitter in LGC menu and rise volume to higher level e.g .50 or 70.
N8 Transmit power very good but depends much on which frequency u use it ...
choose best a non-vacated frequency in
your vicinity.
N85 was also good transmit performance , same as N86 8MP.
questionnaire to myself ,why dont other companys like htc or samsung
implement such a pennycrap feature in their gadgets ?

My guess is their primary target is the US market, which has long since
stopped relying on FM, and prefer to stream music from an online service
like Pandora or Last.fm over wifi/3G.
I saw a review of the N8 on Engadget or Techcrunch, forgot which one,
where they described the transmitter as 'quaint'.
They would rather plug their iSomething into the car stereo with a cable
than use FM transmitter.
Look at the iPhone/iPod - it has never supported FM because it has lost
its importance. Whereas almost every Nokia since 2002 has had an FM radio.

No probs on N79, but range is a few tens of metres for obvious reasons.

I was comparing the N8 with the previous generation [above].
The alternatives have been scrubbed, but you make a fair point and £229 even
from them, with the C6-01 in the wings.

Most new Nokia phones also have a headset output jack which could be
used to connect to a car stereo player, if such a socket was available
on the player. The only reason I use the FM transmitter is because my
car music system doesn't have any kind of external cable input.

It could be because these kind of FM transmitters are illegal in many
countries. Even Nokia only implement this feature phones marketed in
countries which allow it.

I don't know - they introduced the feature in the N79, and there was
just one variant for China that didn't have the transmitter, so looks
like it's legal everywhere but China.

If your car stereo has a cassette player, you can get a device that
looks like a cassette tape to the player but has an audio input cord.
(I used one in my previous car; my current car has an input jack.)

I did try one of those, but it didn't work very well on my car music
system. The system thought a real cassette had been inserted and kept
tying to rewind the non-existent tape. I eventually gave up trying to
use it rather than have it burn out the motor.

Some cars have an video input jack (like my BMW) so you can have sound or
video (not when driving - it blanks the screen for legal reasons).
The release date is set for October 18 but this is only for Nokia’s own
web store. A general release will be on October 22 with almost 1 month
delay from the 1st official release date (set for Oct 1st). But there
will be a nice distribution of the handset because major UK carriers
already signed the deal.
