Default AT&T Usenet Netnews Service Shutting Down

Please note that on or around July 15, 2009, AT&T will no longer be
offering access to the Usenet netnews service. If you wish to continue
reading Usenet newsgroups, access is available through third-party
vendors.

Posted only internally to AT&T Usenet Servers.

First the binary groups, now no Usenet at all? Can anyone recommend another
DSL provider that can be depended on?

I'm using Thunderbird and, amongst other newsgroup servers,
News.sf.sbcglobal.net where there are about 10 subscriptions.

Any suggestions as to another good "catch-all" server to use? Or is
it time to dump ATT broadband?

I've checked twice with 2 different 2nd level techs at ATT and they
didn't know of this and couldn't find anything in their computers.

I told them that I must hear from ATT no later than Monday to ensure
there's time to set up another news service -- all of those msgs I've
changed to "important" etc will be gone unless they're copied out to a
file and I'm talking about 13 newsgroups. Perhaps no time like the
present to dump ATT, but it's a month or two too soon for me.

That's good news! Thought I would need to unsubscribe and subscribe
to a new newsgroup, hence all would be lost with the old subscription.
How do you go about preservation when a NG is cancelled?

Received the official word email today -- and 2nd level techs didn't
know of it a week ago! Quote:
