Default Your opinion about my patent "Automatic keypad locking system based on device's inclination"

Hallo cellular phone users

did you also forget to switch the keylock system on or do you also hate
always to switch it off before doing a phone ?
I do and also had many times the phone dialing without my intention :-)

Some weeks ago I had an innovative idea I just patented:
Lock/Unlock automatically the cellular phone keypad whenever it's not
in a defined inclination (the one when in the hand, e.g. between 30°
and 70°)

How useful do think is such a feature ?
How much would you appreciate such a feature in your new mobile phones
?

Here some additional infos:
-It's automatic: No user action to lock or unlock required anymore - No
"key lock" systems anymore to unlock each time before calling someone.
-It's immediate: The cellular phone is always ready for use as soon as
it's in the hands of the user - No need to press always the annoying
unlocking key sequence - No need to wait the device gets automatically
locked after X seconds before putting it in the pocket
-It's secure: Unintentionally key presses when the device is in the
pocket or bag will have no effect. Device is usable only when in the
hands of the user !

Sounds good in theory but how do you propose to implement such a
feature? Software alone won't be able to tell what angle the phone is
on, It would also require a tilt switch or other physical device to be
installed in the phone.

I can't see it happening.

Hi

the solution is through a small piece of hardware (millimeter size)
which should be built inside the phone. It's called "electronic
inclinometer".

How do you propose to fit this "electronic inclinometer" and implement
required software? I doubt very much you will be able to retro-fit this
into existing phones. If you can get manufactures to fit this to new
models then all well and good, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

See the motion sensor on the nokia 5500, this one can tell in what angle the
phone is.

I don't think this is a usefull feature (locking the phone in a certain
angle). I think the auto-lock feature combined with a 2 key-unlock is as
good as it gets. I unlock my phone blind before using it.

Maybe a vice de/activated key lock

I think there are far more bad ideas that has got patented than really good
ones, just look at most of microsofts patents, what do you think about the
patent for "game floppy directory hierarchy" patent...

Not convinced. Try to implement it, it should be straightformward enough on
a Nokia 5500 with its built-in motion sensor, and see by yourself if it
works or not. I think that this system would be far too unreliable. When a
phone is in a bag for example, it can be in any position. So how would you
detect that? What if the phone is in my jean's pocket? Whenever i sit down,
the phone would then be in a "usable" position, yet still in my jean's
pocket. This is not a system that you could rely on, hence not a system
that anybody would use.

What i would like to see is a harware slider switch similar to the power
switch slider i've got on my Toshiba laptop (the kind of slider button that
doesn't stick to one position or another but always goes back to its
original postition when you release it): slide it to lock the keypad, slide
it again to unlock it. Simple. Instant. 100% reliable. Compatible with
auto-keylock.

IMHO (For what it's worth) Having a touch sensor where you hold the phone
would be a better idea. But once you have the method sorted, the big task
is to convince the manufactures.

Good luck anyway.

Mike
