additional business generated by the service exceed the cost of the
occasional freeloader.

Real world there will be few that use the service and don't buy but again
real world the name of the game is attracting POTENTIAL customer. If no one
comes, no one will buy.

I know of a small coffee shop in rural area that was dying. Set up a open
wifi that was available only the during the times the store was open (9-5).
Improved the bottom line more than the cost of the wifi but not a great
amount.

Somehow the system was left on in the evening. The outdoor seating was full
almost every night to the point where the shop stayed open to 10 pm.
Making out like a bandit and has opens several other locations, all rural
and all open late.

There's a lot of clubs and meet-ups that choose a location based on the
availability of Wi-Fi. It would be considered very rude for everyone to
just sit there and not buy anything, though there will be some in the
group that do that. Clearly the businesses have determined whether it
makes sense to provide wi-fi in terms of the ROI. I know that a few
coffee houses have said that they'll turn off the wi-fi during peak
times to discourage people camping out.

One group I'm in, we tried four different places before we found one
that was ideal. The place we finally chose _advertises_ that the use of
their facility is encouraged for this use on their web site: "We
encourage all bridge clubs, book clubs, study groups, and meet-ups to
use our facility." They sell a lot of high margin coffee and tea drinks
to the people that use the facility. It's quiet, has good food, lots of
parking, and the wi-fi is very fast.

Starbucks CEO said that charging for WiFi when their competitors were
giving it away for free was one of Starbuck's biggest marketing
mistakes. So now WiFi is free at Starbucks.

your post live way too far away to consider dropping by, and the other
1% (you) already know about the place. If it's legitimate, of course.
Not too many places shy away from word of mouth advertising.

This place allegedly exists and advertises they want large groups,
you use this place but you want to keep it a secret.

Surely you can find someplace else if they get too busy, go sit in a park
or ride a bus with their free wifi

Funny thing about Big Mac Wifi on ATT here is that it does not identify
itself as ATT to normally free ATT services, like ESPN3 sports online.
The same Waypoint at our local ChickFilA's just connects to ESPN3 and we
can watch the games, but you get no connect without username and ID or
home cable connection at Big Mac Waypoints anywhere in town.

It's OK, though. The ChickFilA folks are much nicer, have a better
product keep my tea refilled no matter how many hours I stay! Waypoint
there is 3 times faster than Mickey D's, too.

Our local Perkin's Pancake Houses here in N Charleston just dumped
expensive Waypoint when one of the Knology Cable salesmen offered the local
owner a better deal all around. Now, Perkin's is the fastest free wifi in
town, 12Mbps down, 3Mbps up! There's no login page nonsense to slow anyone
down. We have quite a group of "campers" spending hundreds per month
there, now.

I haven't been to the cafe yet, so I can't confirm what they put on
their website. I want to visit first.

However, it's really not unusual to have a cafe of this type in the SF
Bay Area welcome groups to hold meetings at their cafe, and to offer
free wifi. There's a restaurant/Peets combined location next to an
office park that has 2 very large wooden tables, when I was in there ~2
weeks ago there was a business meeting being held on one of them.
There's a coffee shop in San Jose that has week-night meetings held
almost every night of the week, musician open-mike, the local furry
group, etc. Do I need to identify all of them for you?

"A few thousand?" How many people do you still think still read this
group? And of those, how many live close enough to this mystery cafe to
actually visit it?

Besides, since Steven continually points out how "nearly ubiquitous" WiFi
is, that alone means there's nothing special about this particular cafe
any more than if he mentioned they have napkins or utensils.

should even question his pronouncements So if WiFi is ubiquitous why is
SMS touting that the restaurant that can't be named _advertises_ it?

Isn't that a lot like a restaurant _advertising_ that they have electric
lights over each table or running water in the bathroom?

No. Just the one that SMS mentioned as it was put up to make a point.
What's the big deal? There aren't armies of people roaming around
looking for wifi to camp upon. If, for example, it were Coffee Society
by De Anza College in Cupertino, an example of a place where such a
thing might occur, I'd just say Coffee Society.

Given a choice, I think that I would favor a restaurant with running water
in the bathroom.

Presumably that group of people is going to eat somewhere, rather than
cook at home. Wi-Fi is a requirement for many meet-ups. A place with no
Wi-Fi or slow Wi-Fi is writing off a lot of business. If an
establishment always has a line out the door anyway and doesn't need
people coming in and spending a couple of hours in the restaurant, then
there's no need to add services that bring in more customers, but often
that's not the case.

Plenty of businesses manage to stay a going concern without wifi of any kind.
Most of them, in fact.
