Your news provider is better than mine, then! Usenet-news.net is letting
through about a half-dozen Hong Kong spam posts a day hawking shoes, clothes,
etc. I notice aioe.org, who I use as a backup on my mobile phone
sometimes, is blocking them. Aioe's spam filters are a little overzealous,
though, occasionally (though very rarely) trapping legit posts as well.

TimeWarner Cable, like most other ISPs, stopped supplying news
servers, so I'm using groups.google.com. They, unfortunately, let
through habitual spammers, which tends to drown out legit posters in
this newsgroup.
I get the impression that somebody dislikes this newsgroup, and has
found a way to get spammers to post totally unrelated garbage messages
here, on the order of a dozen or more single-message threads per
day.
I had hoped that using groups.google.com's "report" feature might
possibly have some effect -- but it appears to go utterly ignored. Or
perhaps more people need to go to the effort, I don't know.

Google is useless for newsgroups. I have the whole domain killfiled due to
the huge number of spammers. I rarely see anything meaningful that I feel
the need to reply to once somebody else has.
Stick with eternal-september.org. Great uptime and it looks like great
spam filters, based on what everyone else is saying. On a bad day, I see
maybe two spam posts, I am probably catching a bunch by killfiling all
Google posts, but I do not consider ng spam to be an issue at all.

It depends on the newsgroup. In comp.os.linux...,
eternal-september.org is haven to the worst trolls of the newsgroup.
98% of the spam in those newsgroups come from eternal-sept. Easy
filter though; I only filter e-s in the linux newsgroups have exactly
one exception to killfileing the whole domain.

?? I'm not sure there were any 80's before usenet. I started
reading it in 1982 and I'm pretty sure it was a few years old
then.
