There's an app for that...on the $99 iPhone @ AT&T

Default Monday 6-8-09 a much cheaper iPhone for sale!

A cheaper iPhone.

This new iPhone will be the iPhone 3G. While the newly released iPhone
3G S will offer more storage, and presumably a faster processor, more
RAM and faster download speeds, this iPhone will have the same specs
as the last one. But what you get for this is one hell of a price:
$99.

This undercuts the price of the current iPhone models by $100 and more
importantly, also undercuts the cost of the Palm Pre by that amount
(and even more without the Pre's $100 mail-in rebate). $99 is a very
nice sweet spot for a device that remember, will also have a access to
the App Store's over 50,000 apps.

This $99 iPhone will be on sale starting today.

Is there any evidence that the 3Gs will actually be the claimed "twice
as fast" as the 3G? Why am I skeptical? More storage space doesn't interest
me... I can barely filll up half my 8 GB now. Also will the data plan cost
the same? My 2G is $20/mo, the 3G is $30/mo now I think?

....and is that going to be true? I'm confused, is the HSPA replacing 3G
or adding to it?

Not a cheaper iPhone, a less expensive iPhone. The exact same 3G
iPhone that yesterday sold for $199.99

Don't you love how AAPL treats its premium-paying customers?

Is that a giant flushing sound I hear?

My incomplete understanding is that "2.5G" refers to UMTS (Universal Mobile
Telecommunicatioons System), which is based on W-CDMA radio technology,
and has max DL speed of 384 kb/sec, while HSPA (High Speed Packet Access)
is marketed as "3G", is likewise based on W-CDMA, and has max DL speed(s)
of 7.2 mb/sec (or 3.6 mb/sec, or even only 1.8 mb/sec, all depending on
the cellular carrier's networking choices).

The "twice as fast" claim is based on AT&T's current HSPA DL max of 3.6
mb/sec
getting increased, in their planned future network, to 7.2 mb/sec.

Some AT&T-branded equipment currently in the field is hardware-limited to
3.6 mp/sec DL speed (think the old Sierra Wireless 875 AirCard); some is
ready to go as fast as 7.2 mb/sec, and does in other parts of the world,
but
can't here on AT&T's network, because AT&T's network don't go that fast
yet.

(It's like back in the bad old dial-up BBS days -- you may have been using
a 56.8 kb/sec modem, but if the BBS you were connecting to ran a 19.2
kb/sec
modem pool, your modem would have throttled back to 19.2, too :-) .)

[I'll let someone else dissect/analyze HSPA into its HSDPA/HSUPA
components :-) .]

Cheers, -- tlvp

I was thinking the same thing. I understand in the past when they have
reduced prices to close out models. That's a good business decision.

If they are planning to keep this as a continuing model/price for the
immediate future, doesn't that mean that they could have sold it for $99
all along and made money on it? Wouldn't that represent something that
most of the Apple fans say their beloved company would never do to their
customers?

All UMTS is 3G. For that matter, even EGPRS (EDGE) is 3G.

Default Did you know 40,000,000 of these Apples have been sold so far - Re:Monday 6-8-09 a much cheaper iPhone for sale!

State Of The iPhone Ecosystem: 40 Million Devices and 50,000 Apps

MG Siegler
TechCrunch.com
Monday, June 8, 2009;

Apple has just announced yet another milestone for its popular App
Store: 50,000 applications are now available in the store. The
announcement was made at the WWDC event in San Francisco, alongside
the news that Apple has sold some 40 million iPhones and iPod touches.

This follows Apple hitting its 1 billionth app download in April, and
35,000 apps later that month. The platform shows no sign of slowing
down and that's bad news for rivals, including the new Palm Pre, which
launched on Saturday with about 49,981 fewer apps.

Apple went on to show off some of the iPhone 3.0 features ? there are
over 100 new ones, and over 1,000 new APIs. Unfortunately, it looks
like MMS support in the U.S. won't be available until later this
summer ? an AT&T hold up, apparently. As we already heard previously,
cut, copy and paste will be in 3.0 ? something desired by many users
for a long time.

Apple also unveiled a way to rent and purchase movies right from your
iPhone through iTunes on the device over the air. You can also buy TV
Shows, music video and audiobooks. There is also now iTunes U support
on the iPhone.

It looks like Apple has finally figured out the tricky parental
limitation issue, as this is now built-in to the iPhone. This works
not only with movies and TV shows, but more importantly with apps.
This should resolve some of those silly application rejections in the
App Store now.

Tethering will now work with both Macs and PCs. It works wired through
USB or over Bluetooth, Apple calls it "seamless," indicating that it
is super easy to set up. It will be rolling out "later." Which drew
jeers from the crowd.

JavaScript will be 3 times faster in the new version of Safari for the
iPhone. And it will support HTML 5 ? a new standard that Google
highlighted the importance of during its Google I/O conference two
weeks ago.

The new "Find My iPhone" feature drew cheers. If you lose your iPhone
anywhere and have a MobileMe account, you can find exactly where your
iPhone is on a map on the web. You can also ping your iPhone remotely,
which puts out an alert noise to show where it is. And if it is really
stolen, you can now send a remote wipe command, to delete everything
on the phone. A nice feature.

Demos of a health application in which you can remotely monitor
someone's vital signs, in-app purchases through a bookstore app and
TomTom turn-by-turn navigation all drew cheers as well.

A new ZipCar application is pretty cool. You can make the horn honk
and unlock your borrowed car right from the iPhone app.

iPhone 3.0 will be available June 17. Developers get the gold master
today.

I am ambivalent but you have to admit the Apple fanbois are typically
extremely over the top so why wouldn't that invite other opinions?
Should folks who disagree with something not be able to express their
opinions?

For sure, the usual Apple fanboi thing is look at me and how much I
paid. So now what to do for your identity now that the iphone has become
a walmart class product?

And here we were led to believe AAPL was in all ways completely unique.

What a let-down!
