Default Anyone wish to give their gen'l op of the Mogul

I've been searching for a smart phone that will let my wife
and I read and write in Japanese and not have to switch to AT&T (ge:
iPhone).

It's a long shot, but the HTC Mogul with a third party app
(http://www.mobem.com/products/CE-Star.php) might do the trick.

I know there's been some discussion of the Mogul here before,
but as I wasn't in the market, I ignored it.

Would anyone care to share an overall appraisal?

Thanks very much, DGI

Interesting- the addition of Japanese support seems recent- IIRC, earlier
versions were Chinese only.

The program has been around for years, and generally gets good feedback on
the WinMo newsgroups, but again, that was for it's Chinese support, and
perhaps because it's the only game in town. Unlike some competiting
programs it works in any program on the device- not just certain apps (like,
for example, Word Mobile.)

I've never used the Mogul (I've never used Sprint) but the relatively low
memory (64M would scare me off. Windows Mobile 5 and 6 have some memory
"leak" problems, (that are supposedly corrected in the upcoming WM 6.1) in
which opening and closing programs repetedly doesn't correctly return memory
to the system, causing the device to slowly run out of memory with use until
you need to reboot. Larger memoried (128M devices don't "fix" the leak
problem, but have enough memory to spare that it takes a long time to stall
the device. I rebooted my 64MB at least once a day- often twice with high
usage. My AT&T Tilt can run for days on end without a reset.

If possible, I'd wait for a newer (128MB or higher) device, or at least an
official WM 6.1 upgrade to see if the problem is fixed.

I like mine a lot, but I did find that I needed some third party
applications to really make it complete. The memory leak that Todd
Allcock references in this thread is an issue, but third part software
will reclaim this quickly (I'm using SKTools). The latest ROM to
include a task manager that actually lets you close a program by
hitting X (instead of the old action of minimizing it) helps as well.

I've only found one application that this device doesn't have the
memory to support, Zumobi. Other than that, my only complaint is that
the stylus became loose after a couple of months...a problem that,
after doing a web search, I have discovered is not unusual with many
HTC devices.

Performance and data speeds are the best of any device I currently or
have previously owned, but I am sure that the next year or two will
render this (and many other devices) obsolete. Such is the nature of
this industry.

Yes, my stylus became loose too and then I ended up breaking that little
part off that you use to remove it from the Mogul. I went to a local Sprint
store and showed them what happened and they were nice enough to give me a
new stylus.

I'm actually on my second Mogul since most all the buttons, except the power
button quit working on my first Mogul and the Sprint Store replaced that
Mogul without any questions.

That Memory leak problem mentioned by both the other posters on this thread
is bad and it is an even bigger issue when you use a Bluetooth GPS.

Sure the Mogul has a built-in GPS but my Garmin software does not work with
the internal GPS. I use a Garmin Mobile 10 with Garmin Mobile XT software
and once it drops the Bluetooth connection and normally out of the blue the
only way to get the bluetooth connection back is to restart the Mogul.

I won't even run Microsoft Live Search anymore since I always have to
restart the Mogul after using it. It wasn't as bad with their earlier
version but if you try to run that version it will constantly notify you
about an upgrade.

I'll tell you what I like about the Mogul. The Bluetooth PAN does pretty
good going to a laptop even though it will drop connection at least once in
one hour.

I have a program where I can use the Mogul for Bluetooth Dialup access and
that really comes in handy when you want internet access on an iPAQ. Once
you have installed that program on the Mogul all you have to do to get a
connection between an iPAQ 210 and the Mogul is start Internet Explorer on
the iPAQ. The iPAQ will do the rest. With BT PAN you pretty much have to
make your connection by hand all the time and once that connection breaks
you have to press the "connect" button on the Mogul to restart that
connection.

I have a program called WMWiFiRouter that will let me transfer the internet
from my Mogul to another device and it is pretty cool but it doesn't always
work between two cell phones and the BT DUN always works between two
cellphones..

In summation. I like the Mogul even with all it's quirks but if your in no
hurry I'd wait for a device with Windows 6.1 and see how those reviews go.

Default Re: Anyone wish to give their gen'l op of the Mogul

I have had a mogul for about a year. I can't find another phone I would
recommend over it, partially because I want a touch screen and WM6 due to
the types of programs I am presently using. I did have to replace the phone
twice. Once was because it wouldn't sync, and I could find no reason for
this problem. The phone was replaced for free. The second replacement was
because the phone would not charge... I had a bent pin in the mini-usb slot,
and even straightening out the pin didn't fix the issue. I then bought the
insurance on the phone, and subsequently, I have had no problem at all with
my phone for perhaps 8 months.

I still like it. I couldn't recommend any other phone over it, but I don't
switch phones every month. BT connectivity in my car "sucks" (sounds like I
am in a well), which I have read relates to a "bluetooth stack" issue that
is experenced by Windoze Mobile phones and had not been corrected by HTC.
Perhaps the new 6.1 rom will help.

I have had the mogul for about 8 months. I would say that definitely
the strength of the mogul is the keyboard and the battery size. The
weakness as mentioned before is the lack of RAM.

This phone/PDA is very good if you run a custom ROM. I have been using
the No2CHem 2.2 5770 Preview 8 and it has been pretty good. Windows
Mobile 6.1 has been made available through custom ROMS for quite some
time now and the evolution of such has made the phone very usable. I
use Memmaid to close apps and clear RAM so that the phone is very stable.
