Statement from Sprint Regarding the HTC Mogul

Hi guys, hopefully the following message will answer some questions we ahve had regarding the HTC mogul, the new ROM version, and problems that many have experienced with it.
For folks burned by the last rom here's the most recent official statement
from HTC and Sprint.

Sprint and HTC regret any inconvenience customers have recently experienced
with the Mogul. HTC is working on a new version of the software ROM for the
Mogul which incorporates enhancements for Bluetooth performance and corrects
issues that were unintentionally created by ROM version 2.16.651.0 (posted
on HTC's website on October 24). Both Sprint and HTC have begun testing the
new software and are targeting to make it available for download by the end
of November. Once fully tested the download will be made available on this
webpage. Please bookmark this page for easy reference.

As a short-term solution, customers who downloaded the ROM version 2.16
should download the previous ROM version 2.09.651.3 posted as the Download
below. This will restore previous functionality to the device until a new
version is complete.

Additionally, HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which
enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into
the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available
in early 1Q 2008. We would also like to extend our thanks to those customers
that have taken the time to identify and report these issues to us.

What I think is odd is PhoneScoop.com list the 6700 as having GPS even
though you can't use the built in hardware for it. It looks like SPRINT and
HTC are going to let you use the built in GPS on the 6800.

I've already started shopping for GPS programs that work with a PocketPC and
I've found three of them so far. CoPilot, nRoute and Iguidance.

Since I already own a copy of nRoute for a laptop, I'm giong to see what I
need to get that one on my 6800 first.

Don't forget to also try the excellent (and free) Windows Live Search.
(Go to wls.live.com on the 6800 and it'll autodetect the device type and
offer up a download.)

While WLS doesn't give spoken directions (just a "beep" for an upcoming
direction and a "boop" when it arrives) and requires a data connection,
it does have a speech recognition function, allowing you to tell it an
address or business name (much easier than trying to punch in a
destination in a vehicle.) So you tap the left softkey ("speak") and say
"Alice's Restaurant" or whatever, and it will list the closest matches to
your location. MS added a 25 closest gas stations sorted by gas prices
feature recently as well, that has come in handy for me when needing to
refill a rental car prior to dropping it off in a strange city! There's
also a nice "Save to contacts" function so when you find a business (or
even residential listing) you can add it to your Outlook contacts with a
tap.


Obviously "off line" GPS programs have major advantages- no need for data
connectivity, spoken directions, etc., but online apps like WLS have
advantages as well- constantly updated POI databases, live traffic
updates in major cities, and probably most important for me- not having
to remember to copy the right county/region/state maps to my phone's SD
card prior to traveling!

I still carry my offline GPS software as a backup (the excellent, but no-
longer-available Mapopolis) but rarely, if ever, use it anymore- WLS is
now my main navigation program.

If WLS didn't exist, I'd probably use it, but IMHO, WLS is superior in many
ways- the speech recognition, integration with your Outlook contacts (you
can save lookups to your contacts and easily select a contact as an origin
or destination) and WLS has an easy movie showtimes and gas price lookup.
My biggest peeve with GMM, however, is that it installs to the device's
main memory whether you specify memory or storage card. I accepted this as
a minor bug in the v1.0 version, but it persists to this day.

In the plus column, GMM seems to calculate routes a little bit faster than
WLS, however, and there's a slight Google humor factor missing from MS
products; once when calculating a route from Boston to Paris as a lark, it
gave directions to a beach, then instructed me to "swim east across the
Atlantic 3000 miles" then continued the directions from the French coast!


Both apps are free, and both worthy of consideration, but I prefer WLS,
considering it also doubles as a quick white/yellow pages with a click-to-
call link. Their UIs are different enough that user preference probably
comes into play as to your favorite.

Both get updated versions fairly regularly, so we get to benefit from the
"feature war" between them as well, so I wouldn't completely write-off
either one, either.
