Far smarter to but t outright for $150 and get the Walmart $30 plan.
It's $30 a month less than a contract plan, no tax is added and it
offers tons more data. Unless you use many hundreds of voice minutes,
you are ahead.

Here in WA state they only add sales tax to the $30 prepaid charge while
postpaid plans are loaded with all kinds state and federal charges that
amount to significant part of the total bill. So I also bought my Amaze
4G outright and I am on that Walmart plan, though I got it directly from
T-Mo online. You can't find a better deal than that if you don't call
more than 100 minutes a month. Heck, I don't even call 10 minutes with
it because I also have a landline phone. Actually I don't even use much
of TM's data network as more often than not, I have to use WiFi. So
texting is where no-limit really matters for me. I wonder if T-Mo will
still have such good deals with their planned LTE network.

And loading funds through a vendor like callingmart gets around even
that tax. I had it load directly to my number; worked great.

Yeah, I used less than 10mins/month because I was always on wifi (GrooVe
IP) or near a landline.

As I've never heard of this Callingmart before, I googled it up and
bought a $30 credit for only $29.70 using my PayPal acct. No extra
charges were added. Callingmart emailed me the confirmation with a PIN
number and usage instructions:
"Dial *TOGO (mobile phone) or 1-877-778-2106 (landline) and follow the
voice prompts.
NOTE: Please make sure that your prepaid account is set-up for Monthly
Unlimited Rate Plan in order to apply this Unlimited PIN accordingly.
*These T-Mobile ToGo refill PIN (s) should be loaded on a prepaid phone
within 90 days from date of purchase. The actual airtime minute
expiration starts only on the day that you load it on your phone."
However, when I called up that *TOGO number, T-Mo present me only
payment options with credit, debit, or refill cards and I had no idea
which would lead me to enter Callingmart's PIN mumber. Can you help me
out with this one?

The Callingmart PIN is a "refill card". Select that option and follow the
prompts.

Thanks, Tood. Now that you told me, I realized that an even simpler
method was to youe the phone's MyAccount app to do it. It worked like a
charm. What I don't get though what Callingmart gets out of this. But
hey, I'm not complaining. ;-)

(a) Callingmart gets those PINs at discount from face value (so: spread);
(b) some portion of PINs sold never do get used (lost, forgotten, mislaid),
and after a year they're without further value (split w/ Page Plus, maybe).

BTW: "Get 5% Discount on Pageplus Refills" "Offer expires 05/15/2012."
"Use coupon code mom125 in shopping cart to get the discount!" Callingmart.

Depending on the carrier, and volume purchased, resellers pay 85%-90% of
face value for cellular prepaid cards (at least those were the numbers
back when I was in the biz.) That leaves them a little wiggle room to
offer a slight discount and still make a profit.

Refill. You punch in the numbers.
In the future you can have it loaded directly to your phone num for you
so you don't have to do any of that.
I mentioned CM since they are the darling at the HowardForums phone
forums, and I have personal good experience with them. There are many
others similar.

And after I understood what that PIN number was for, I have to agree
with their experiences as well. So that's what I'll be using in the
future. Coincidently, I've just noticed that T-Mo introduced a new app
for prepaid users to ease refills. However, I doubt it would be as cheap
as CM.

Going directly through T-Mobile's website charges no tax and costs the
same as CalingMart. I just add $30 each month for my prepaid plan.

Probably a State by State issue. While t-mobile is "operating"
in every state, they might only be charging sales tax on
internet orders in a few of them.
- Amazon charges in the half dozen or so where they both have
a physical business presence such as a warehouse, and in
which the State mandates it.

I just double checked my credit card bill and there is no tax.

I get charged tax from TMO, and AFAIK they don't discount 5% the way CM
does consistently. Used to be 7-10%, but the margins changed in the
last 6mos or so.

There must be some rule for determining whether T-Mobile charges tax.
My credit card shows a charge of exactly $30. I can't imagine it's the
state you are in because I'm in California and they never miss an
opportunity to take tax money.

State legislation.

If T-Mobile isn't a corporate entity in California, then they don't have
to pay California's taxes. As a citizen, you are technically supposed to
claim and pay the tax yourself, but as you can imagine, it seems to slip
the mind of most people.

Not just slipped, but even the legislators must not have taken it very
seriously by not making the payment of self-paid sales tax as simple as
paying it at the cash register. How many people would even know how to
pay that sales tax directly, not to mention whether they would even want to?

Arizona added a box to this year's state income tax form, you check it
if you've purchesed stuff on the internet and then it opens a form to
fill out and calculate the tax.
I don't know if anyone has checked the box or not.....

But how many people want to be burdened with keeping records of all
their on-line purchases? Oh, maybe those few billioners who want to pay
more taxes than what they owe now. But then, they can afford their own
been counters.

Michigan has had the "Use Tax" thing on its income tax forms for as long
as we've lived here. Items more than $1000 are supposed to be itemized;
if you don't have receipts for the lesser items, TurboTax estimates an
amount based on income.

Fortunately I live in a state without state income tax and we don't
file anything for sales tax.

The use tax is owed regardless of whether you pay it.
