During a single session or for the rest of the "day?"

The rest of the 24 hour period. I assume they want to make the pass
unattractive as possible as an alternative to a traditional monthy data card
plan. ($1.49/day is only $45/month assuming you use it every day. A data
card plan is $50/month.)

I find the day pass a nice alternative to the $10-15 some resort hotels
charge for WiFi, and I keep an extra T-Mo prepaid tetherable phone around
for it. I also let my son "splurge" for it occasionally on his unlocked
iPhone when we're traveling and he wants to stay connected.

Assume by "... splurge for it occasionally on his unlocked iPhone..." you
mean he's using your tmoble phone's hotspot?

No, he has a T-Mo prepaid SIM that I'm willing to pay for as long as his
usage is limited to a reasonable amount. Unlike most kids his age, he
hates texting, and also uses very few voice minutes. I'll probably add
him to our family plan eventually, but right now he uses less than $2 a
month of prepaid airtime, and I have a couple of leftover T-Mo Gold
Rewards SIMs (only need to be refilled once a year) with good sized
balances I need to burn off, so adding him to our family plan for "only
$10/month" would be a false economy.

My wife and I have a T-Mo family plan with unlimited grandfathered
"dumbphone" data that we've kept under the T-Mo radar for six years now,
using Windows Mobile and iOS devices. Until recently we've never
exceeded a few hundreds of MBs in a given month, though I recently had a
few spikes while playing with a Windows Phone 7 handset and Android.
Both blew my data usage through the roof! Trying to stay under the
radar, I avoid tethering my netbook or laptop to the contract phone for
anything longer than a quick email session. If I need "all day" tethered
data I just spend the buck-fifty and use a day pass on a prepaid SIM.

My son mostly uses WiFi, but when traveling we'll let him buy a few $1.49
data days so he can keep up with his email, Facebook, download an app or
two, etc.

For more sporadic/occasional use he logs into my phone in hotspot mode,
but that's murder on both of our batteries, which is problematic when
traveling and convenient AC isn't always nearby.
The hotspot trick does allow us to circumvent the iOS 20MB app download
limit on a long car trip, but 99% of the time that stuff can wait for
"real" WiFi.
