Default T-Mobile Comet now $119 with $50 prepaid card

To come off a long thread on this phone. I bought at $119 with a $25
card. Now they're including a $50 card. Maybe they're getting rid of the
model or something. It's a decent little smartphone for the price.

Any idea what the prepaid services' roaming tariffs are (overseas) for voice, for T-Mo roaming partners' data,
and for WiFi data, respectively? (And yes, I'm aware that roaming partners' data is UN-likely to be at the phone's HSDPA+ speeds becauser of the 1700 =/= 1900 discrepancy.)

My only personal experience was that it was $.69/minutes in Canada.

Voice, I guess, within Canada? Thanks, Travis. And cheers, -- tlvp

T-Mo prepaid doesn't roam outside North America. Only in Canada
($0.69/min. IIRC) and Mexico ($1.49.) Roaming data is $15/MB.

I'm not sure I understand the WiFi question. The charge for WiFi would
be up to the individual provider at whatever hotel, café, etc. you used
it at.

The Comet should get high-speed cell data in Europe- it supports T-Mo US'
1700MHz band as well as the 2100MHz "world" band, allowing T-Mo Europeto
offer the device as well.

From other posters' perhaps overly ambiguous language, I was led to infer
that T-Mo had some way of *knowing* when you were getting data over wi-fi,
and charging (perhaps $1.50 per 24-hour period) for that privilege.

I agree that I'd think such charges unconscionable and unjustifiable, but
I had to ask to help confirm or repudiate the inference I was led to make.

So I take it T-Mo does no such thing (except perhaps in a T-Mo Hot-Spot), eh?

Oh, neat :-) . Now why did I think Europe used a 1900 MHz band for HSDPA,
same as at&t in the USA, while it was Japan/Korea that used 2100 MHz?

TIA for clarifications; and cheers, -- tlvp

I posted this reply on the minor thread instead of the main one, since the
latter has gone wildly off the original topic.

I have kept a TMO prepay as a backup for many years, inserting the SIM
into whatever phone happened to be "extra" at the time. The discussion
about this bargein led me to do some research.

First, for me, the $50 prepaid card would be less useful because it can
only be used on the prepay account created with this purchase. So I could
not use it to uprade phones and load $50 into my existing account.

Second ... check the reviews on this model, which range from tepid (the
professional review sites) to brutal (actual users). The latter post
comments like "DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE", "non-existent battery life, carry
a charger in your pocket", and "slow", "crashes".

Granted it's cheap. But sometimes a bargain leaves you wanting for more
even at a slightly higher price. I passed on this one. My $.02

With the possible exception of some US territories and Canada, there is no
international roaming on US T-Mobile prepaid.

I bought during the $25 card promo and the $25 card was a physical
"retail" card like you'd get at a store, so I can use it with my pre-
existing prepaid account. Thanks for the info about the $50 promo- now I
don't feel bad that I missed it.

The Comet is what it is- certainly low-end by today's standards, but so
far it's been pretty stable, and has run whatever software I've loaded on
it, except for a slight bug in "Angry Birds." It doesn't display
properly when run- you have to run it, turn the phone off and back on,
then it displays/plays fine. I suspect the Comet will seem like an
upgrade to dumbphone users, but a downgrade to smartphone enthusiasts,
which is really where it's marketed anyway. For my purposes- a WinMo
user just getting my "feet wet" with Android, it's sufficient.

In any case, for $120 w/o contract, it's a steal, even it ends up as an
MP3 player/game player for my kids.

Mexico as well, albeit at a buck and a half per minute. I have a
"leftover" Gold Rewards account with a high balance I take to Cancun with
me- I'd rather use up a balance from money I already spent long ago than
add new roaming charges to my regular monthly account.

No- the $1.49 is a "day pass" to use T-Mo cellular data on prepaid
phones. T-Mo is out of the loop as far as WiFi goes (unless you're using
a T-Mo Wi-Fi Hotspot, of course!)

Dennis Ferguson or SMS could better answer this, but it's my
understanding that Japan has no actual GSM/GPRS, but has UMTS @ 2100 for
voice and data, which is compatible with 3G-enabled GSM phones with
2100MHz. Europe, I believe, uses 900 and 1800 for GSM, and 2100 for UMTS.
