Default Alltel moving me to Verizon next month, may get new plan before then

Hi,

I received a letter from Alltel on Friday saying as of July 11th I'd
be a Verizon customer, which with the buyout I expected to be switched
eventually. Given my cellphone plan has expired I was planning on
going into the Alltel store this week to get a new phone and plan, but
with the Verizon switch I checked the plans on both to see which would
be best -- Alltel now or wait for Verizon.

What I found is the plan I wanted to go with at Alltel doesn't have an
equivalent plan at Verizon, and the next one up will be over $20/month
more. But maybe I'm missing something.

Through Alltel I'm looking at this, which is $89/month plus tax and
fees:
-- Greater Freedom 1200 Plan w/ 2 Phones and 10 MyCircle - $69
-- Insurance on both - $10
-- 200 TM/Month on both - $10

And here is the closest thing through Verizon, which is $20 more than
Alltel:
-- Nationwide Basic Family SharePlan 1400 w/ 2 Phones and 10 Friends
and Family - $89
-- 250 TM/Month on both - $10
-- Insurance on both - $9

Honestly we don't travel much, so the Greater Freedom plan from Alltel
would work for us 95% of the time. And 1200 vs 1400 minutes isn't
huge since our current plan actually only has 500 minutes. I would go
with Verizon's 750 minute plan, but the reason we're able to stay
under the 500 minutes now is thanks to the 10 MyCircle numbers which
the 750 minute plan doesn't have.

So it's like Verizon has this huge gap between their lowest plan and
the next one up, and we need something right in the middle. Hopefully
Alltel will let me sign-up for the plan before the switch-over, but
who knows. Plus I'd really like to get the Motorola VE465, which
Verizon doesn't offer.

Does anyone have any other reasons why I should wait for the Verizon
switchover?

Thanks --

Alex

You don't have to buy your phone from Verizon!

In many ways you would be better off buying your phone from Motorola
than from VZW. At least you will get the full functionality of the
phone if you buy from Motorola; Verizon is notorious for crippling their
phones! For instance, if your phone has a still and/or video camera,
VZW wants you to e-mail your photos to yourself and pay VZW for the
"service". I've got hardware and software that let me send photos to my
computer over the USB cable. I don't have to pay VZW for this.

If you buy your phone from VZW, you will get it a subsidized price but
some of the functionality will probably be disabled.

If you have your own phone and simply activate it with VZW you need not
sign a contract obligating you for two years! I believe that you can
arrange for month to month service that you can discontinue at any time.

Be sure you understand all your options before you sign anything!

If you want Greater Freedom, You need to be in the Alltel office first
thing in the morning. As soon as the Borg take control on the magic date,
no more Alltel plans will be allowed.....but you can keep your Alltel plan
until the end of the contract before the Borg may or may not try to screw
us.

I renewed my contract today....right after getting the letter about the
Borg assimililation. "Resistance if Futile."

Larry...

Being a HUGE Trek fan I literally laughed out loud with your
reply

I just got off the phone with Alltel and picked-up the National
Freedom 900 plan, and that on two phones with text messaging and
insurance for about $90/month. I'd be paying $20-$30 more at Verizon
for anything close, so I'm glad I got switched over the switch over.

BTW, as I was typing this I saw a commercial for Star Trek Scene-It.
OT but seemed fitting :-P

Alex

If you are even considering changing to an Alltel plan before you
convert into the VZW billing system, DO IT NOW. It may already be too
late (I don't know as I'm now taking VZW calls so don't deal much with
the alltel side anymore - and I somewhat miss those calls).

There will be a point when plans changes will be frozen out if you
haven't hit that point already so don't delay if that is what you are
considering.

I don't see any difference between Verizon Wireless and the Borg, except,
of course, the Borg has 200G technology...(c;]

Politically, they're very similar.....

Outside of being a paid concert goer at Woodstock in '69, I can also say I
was glued to our Zenith B&W TV for the very first Star Trek episode. I had
just reported aboard USS Everglades (AD-24) as a shiny new Electronic
Technician 3rd Class in 1966. The series, and my sea duty aboard
Everglades ended in late 1969 after attending Woodstock on leave from
Charleston, SC.

Like the Enterprise, Navy never let me steer Everglades, either....(c;]
