Default Best Phone for Verizon Network?

I recently lost my E815 phone and now I'm eligible for a phone
upgrade. What are the best phones currently available on the Verizon
network?

I recommend a Motorola Razr or Krzr on the Sprint network and you can force
roaming on the Verizon Network if you choose. With Sprint, you get the best
of both worlds (Sprint Network and Verizon Network). You really can't go
wrong!

Is there any particular reason why Sprint the only word in your vocabulary?

You are starting to remind me of the juvenille iphone fanboi who
littered these groups a few months back.

I killfiled him a long time back. If people don't reply to these

I went from an e815 to the Razr v3m last year. The transition was pretty
seamless, and I've been happy with the phone. I did disable EVDO
though---made a big difference in battery life. If all you do is make and
get phone calls, I highly recommend the mod. It's easy, keypad stuff.

Though I really haven't traveled much "out in the sticks" this past year, I
never really noticed much difference in the reception. Don't let people
scare you with the "Razr can't hold a candle to the e815" comments.

The difference isn't in orders of magnitude as they'd have you believe. It's
incremental---if you spend your time in an area where VZW works well, you
won't notice the difference, but if you spend time in places with iffy
reception, it may.

Dean

No Troll here. I am just stating the facts. I was a satisfied Verizon
customer for many years until I moved and Verizon couldn't provide service
in my area and they suggested that I go with Sprint. I have been very
satisfied ever since because I can use the Sprint Network or set my phone to
use the Verizon Network whenever I want to do so. It is a very convenient
feature and no other cellular provider offers a feature to force roaming and
actually stay on the "other network" even though you could be receiving full
signal strength on your home network. That is really an awesome option. I am
not a troll and don't work for Sprint or own any Sprint stock, I am just
tired of everyone blindly drinking Verizon "It's the Network" Koolaid and
bashing Sprint based upon information that they heard five years ago.

If you are not a troll you have certainly overdosed on sprint koolaid.
You can't even respond without launching into a fanboi description of
why you think sprint is better than sex..

Another opinion:

I went the same way. My E815 is now re-activated and the V3m sits
in it's box unused. Why? It seems inferior to the E815 in every
way, I like the Razr's thinness but don't like the short battery
life, poorer sound quality and, although I seldom use the camera,
the E815 takes M*U*C*H better pictures.

> I did disable EVDO though---made a big difference in battery life.

Ditto, can't see much improvement.

I have, some, not a lot.

The Razr can't hold a candle to the E815, not trying to scare
anybody, just giving my own experience with the two phones.

It's not just the horrid red Verizon UI, that's gone because I
flashed the V3m to the generic Motorola flash and then re-enabled
all the Verizon features along with the necessary seem edits to make
the phone work as it should.

Just one more point, the E815 didn't require a reflash and only
needed two or three seem edits to make everything work.

Sprint really is better than sex! On the other hand, Verizon phones come
with a free prescription for Viagra. :-)
Note: That was an attempt at humor. No need to respond and call me a
"fanboi".

Thanks for the input here, folks.

So is the E815 really still a contender two and a half years down the
road? I did like the E815, though admittedly, my use was pretty much
limited to making and receiving calls, didn't do much fancy stuff. I
found it a bit bulky, especially with the OEM leather case and clip. I
was hoping there'd be a killer, ultra-slim phone on the market to
dethrone the E815, but perhaps I should stick with it.

Has anyone tried the Voyager, the iPhone knock-off?

My son hated his Razr. He said it was the worst phone he ever had. Of
course he used to be with Verizon but his company now supplies his phone
and it's Cingular. Terrible reception in the heart of Metro-New Jersey.

If Sprint's network was so good you wouldn't have to force roam.

Not exactly the best of both worlds. All things being equal, distance
from tower etc., the 800 Mhz signal of Verizon has better building
penetration than the 1900 signal of Sprint. Same is true for GSM
carriers as far as building penetration goes.

I have found that to be true with my V9M even in places with "iffy"
reception.

Consider the Moto v6c if there is any chance of your travelling overseas.
This is Verizon's current world phone (that is, it support GSM 900/1800
overseas as well as EV-DO/1XRTT/CDMA 800/1900 in North America) and is a
good deal better than the Motorola A840 which was its predecessor.

It's a slider instead of a flip. Oh well.

It has the Verizon UI, but all the familiar secret Motorola codes still
work (including debug mode!).

It has full Bluetooth, and you can load your own ringtones to it (just
rename the file extension to be .qcp instead of .mid or .mp3).

It'll run VZW Navigator.

The GSM side is SIM-locked to Verizon's (actually, Vodafone Netherlands)
SIM, but they will give you the unlock code if you ask and agree that they
aren't responsible if you use some other company's SIM (they'll FAX you
the agreement). Note that it does NOT have North American GSM bands, so
you can't use it to roam onto AT&T or T-Mobile.

Performance has been quite good, and IMHO better than my old Motorola
A840.

Of course, your mileage may vary...

As stated in this thread, the V9M is a great replacement for the e815!

We'll see, it's my current choice for my New Every Two but that's about
1 1/2 years from now and who knows what will be available then?

I'll second that. We had 4 e815's... My wife and I upgraded to the v9m,
and my kids stayed with the 815's.

The v9m is a little pricey, but I haven't regretted upgrading from the
815. I think the Verizon UI is incredibly sucky... and that's my
biggest complaint.

Reception is about equal to the 815, and battery life isn't quite as
good - but not horrible, either.

I used to go 4 days without charging the 815. My v9m is every 3 days...
or a little more if I'm playing with it.

Nice features, and a great form factor. I was looking for something
that wasn't nearly as bulky to carry in a pocket, and the v9m fits that
bill nicely.

That's why I flashed my V9M to the US Cellular firmware. A much improved
GUI, and I can read text messages from the outer display.

If you're technically inclined check out howardforums.com for info.

Does VzW still carry the LG 8300? I think it's a really nice phone with
excellent sound quality and battery life. Some reviewers knocked it for its
build quality, claiming that it sacrificed too much in driving down size and
weight. But my wife and I have had ours for more than a year, and they're
still going strong.

If you don't like the Verizon UI, get a Blackberry Pearl. It gives you the
option of using several variants of the original BB UI.

Verizon's changes to the BB UI are mostly superficial anyway. The Pearl's menu
structure is vast and complex, and I guess Verizon wasn't up for tackling a
total re-do of the OS interface. So even with the VzW UI, you don't find
yourself dropping into the usual quagmires of "Get It Now" advertising, etc.
