I currently have a Motorola E815. A few years ago it was considered by
most people to have the best signal and voice quality of any phone in
the Verizon line.
I am now eligible to receive my "New Every Two" replacement. Which
phone is *now* considered to have the best signal and voice quality? I
do not want to step *down* in quality from the E815.

If you're satisfied with your phone, why lock yourself into yet another two
year commitment/contract? Just ride month to month and if-- and only if-- a
sweeter deal comes along, grab it...

The E815 is probably still the best. If you're happy with Verizon and
want to keep them for two more years why not get a free phone (V3M is a
popular one) and try it, then re-activate the E815 sell the new phone
on Ebay for $100 or so?
If you don't get a new phone you'll lose the credit.

Nah, they just threaten you with that-- telling you if you don't re-up by a
certain date, you'll "lose" the credit-- as you said.
I've been off-contract almost three years and they still regularly write,
email and call me trying to entice me to sign another contract. And they
keep offering the new every two phone-- plus an increasing level of perks or
goodies. If they offered me something I'd be interested in, I might do it--
and I've told them that. They don't want churn-- it's very expensive for
them...
One problem is that all their "offers" are really aimed the teenage set--
while I collect Social Security. I don't care a flip about texting buckets,
IM, photos, "skins" (whatever they are), screen art, rockband ringtones,
psychedelic colored phones, etc.

I can relate to you. The problem is that we're "at the end of the internet",
so to speak, ie.there's nothing left that interests us.
That's why I upped to a Blackberry Curve. I can at least dabble with the
internet, read the NY Times, check my home and office email while my wife is
shopping in Nordstroms or we're awaiting to board our flight to Cabos.
I surf the internet on my LG VX6100 with free data. I've been surfing for
$1 per month and unlimited data for 2-3 years. Any phone with Moblikle
Web2.0 can surf the net, not with Vzw's $5/mo fee but for $1/mo. Hopke.net
is the best combination of cheap/reliable I have found.

I replaced by E815 with an LG8350 about a year ago, and have
been very happy with the quality and reliability.
According to my personal experience, and in total agreement with several
reviews, the current best is the Motorla V9M. For the first time in 23 years
of using cellular, I am completely happy with my phone.

Newer models can come very close. The issue is usable signal. You can be
receiving a signal that is so weak, it is unusable for making a call. It is
often better for the phone to release the signal and go to a different
provider as extended network or roam.

Well, I don't think that that "wireless mobile" form of web browsing that
your phone offers is quite at the same level as I'm talking about, but if
you're happy with it that's all that matters. And I may be incorrect about
the comparison too.
As usual, I was concerned because of complaints I saw here about the Razr.
My v3m is more than 1 1/2 years old now. I'm on the original battery. Never
had a service issue with the phone, and I think the voice quality is every
bit as good as my old phone. I DID go into test mode and disable EVDO. Takes
2 minutes.
I try to keep in mind that A.C.V. is largely populated by people a little
like me in the respect that cellphone minutiae occupies maybe a little too
much brain space. In other words, I've seen phone complaints here in regard
to phone models I've owned, and never seen the problems myself.
That said, I've gotten invaluable info here re: phones to avoid, etc.
The LG 83XX are excellent phones, but I like the Moto feature set (missed
call beep, and the ability to hear yourself through the earpiece---I forgot
the term) better. JMHO, YMMV, etc.

I've done the Hopke thing too and while hopke does provide access at a very
cheap price, I wouldn't exactly call my experience "surfing"

Two of my kids have V3M razors that they like. I've had an LG VX8300 for two
years now, that I really love. I find the voice quality excellent. My dad
had one as well, that he dropped and damaged the camera, and I was able to
buy him a brand new one from a vendor at Ebay for $109 delivered

I had an e815 before my current V3m. I think the V3m is comparable in voice
and signal quality, and it's easier to carry (internal antenna). I've had
it for for close to two years and it's been very reliable - battery is still
good. I decided very recently to upgrade to a Moto w755 after reading a
bunch of reviews and handling one in a Verizon store. It is very similar to
the V3m and improved in many ways; it has a 2.5mm headphone jack so you can
charge the phone on the usb port while using a wired headset (the V3m uses
the usb port for both the headset and charging, so you have to choose), the
menus look better and the keys respond more smoothly when navigating the
menus. You can also turn Bluetooth On/Off with a touch button while the
phone is closed. I can't say yet how the w755 compares to the e815 though.
If you get a phone from a Verizon store I believe you have some time to try
it out and can return/exchange it if it doesn't meet your needs.

I followed my e815 with a V3M. Then when that died I got a V9M. IMO, the
V9M is the closest in reception to the e815. Works great!
I'm eligible for a new phone and really want one with the best voice
and music playing (mp3) quality, as well as the ability to receive VZ
Navigator. Narrowing down by these qualities, I picked a Samsung
Gleam but am still not sure it's the best one. What's more, they told
me the phone would cost $100 if I were getting a new contract and $150
if I merely renew my contract! So what, precisely, am I getting for
staying with Verizon and upgrading after two years? Sounds like
paying full price! Thanks for clarification on both (what phone I
should get and why it's costing so much.)

You are getting a steep discount on the price of the phone!
CAREFULLY COMPARE your existing contract with the new contract they want
you to sign!! TANSTAAFL! (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch!)
Or you could ask the price of the phone with NO contract. They may tell
you that they aren't allowed to do that or they may tell you that the
phone will cost you $515.99 plus tax! One way or another, you WILL pay
for that phone.
What phone you should get is a problem only you can solve. There are
variations in price, quality, and features! Pick one that meets your
needs! Note that quality and features both cost money!
Yeah, well the guy at the store told me it's a $50 rebate you mail in,
off the price you pay in the store. I'm down to the choices of
Blackberry Pearl 8130 or Samsung Gleam SCH-u700. More people seem to
have gone with the Blackberry Pearl and said good things about it.
You do have to buy a data package starting at $25, but it comes with a
basic GPS so you'd be spared the expense of subscribing to VZ
Navigator although it is better. Bottom line, to me, is ease of use
and how good it sounds. They offered to let me listen to both in the
store.

Sidetone, is that the thing where you hear an echo of your own voice,
so each word repeats right after you've said it? I HATE that--had no
idea anyone would do it on purpose.

That sounds as if you have "speaker phone" turned on and you are calling
someone within a few feet of you. This happened to me and my wife when
we were trying out our new phones in our kitchen. Most perplexing. We
went back to the Verizon store and asked about it. The guy told me it
was because speaker phone was turned on. I had to ask how to turn it on
or off. It turned out to be a button on the side of the phone where it
could be activated accidentally.
Sidetone is what lets you hear through the earpiece what you are saying
to the microphone. Land line phones have been doing it for at least the
last 60 plus years.

I've sometimes had the echo effect in my landline phone but thank
goodness the occurrence is infrequent.
Well, geez, if I wait a few weeks I can get the friggin' iPhone for
only 30 bucks less than Verizon wants for the Blackberry Pearl 8130! http://www.apple.com/iphone/ Maybe less as it would mean signing up
with them as a new user. I need help deciding!

Having tried any number of possible replacements, I've decided to keep
the E815 and use it till it dies - none of the newer phones I've tried
are as good as "phones". As we all know, the trend today is for all the
other stuff built into cell phones.
So, if you want the best "phone" - it's still the Motorola E815......

Yes, it is. I agree completely and to keep it from dying, just be
careful when connecting the charger. That seems to be the weak spot on
E815s so be careful, be gently and it may last forever!

I just replace my Samsung A930 with a Samsung U550. So far I like it.
According to reviews is not rated to have the best phone quality but it
certainly is good. It does not have all of the best features but it
certainly is good enough. It is small, light and well made and seem to
work fine. I chose this over the LG Choc 3 because I liked the handling
better even though the Choc3 sound quality was a little better. On nice
feature is you can answer and use the spkr phone with the lid closes and
can open and close the lid thereafter without disconnect.

This morning I was meeting with a local politician who was bitching
about his Motorola Razr from Verizon because of the way Verizon cripples
the phones (he was most upset about the lack of "vibe then ring"). He
wanted an iPhone 3G, but he first tried another AT&T model for two weeks
before the launch of the 3G iPhone, and found, as many local residents
have found, that he couldn't get good coverage at his house or office,
so he reluctantly went back the RAZR.
He really missed hise E815, which he said he had run over, but the
charger on that generation of Motorola phones was a real weak point.
OTOH, the mini-USB plug that they went to is a big plus compared to most
other phone chargers.
