Default Call Waiting

OK so I make a call then I get a call waiting signal so an incoming
call. The first call isn't answered so I'm leaving a message on an
answering machine so no one to tell to hang up. My choices seem to be.

1) press the end button and hang up on both calls
2) press the call button and answer the new incoming call but since I
can't hang up on the 1st call I'm incurring minutes

If I do this from my regular land line phone I can just hang up on the
1st call and then the phone rings with the new incoming call. I've
asked VZW about this and they say their equipment isn't capable.
Sounds like a load of crap to me and they just want me to use up my
time, but I'm willing to say I'm wrong. Is there some reason call
waiting on my cell doesn't work like call waiting on my land line?

TIA

Or, 3) Call VZW and have CW turned OFF.

CW is a nuisance and is rude to the person who gets interrupted.

Yes, because the switches (and just about everything in between) are
different.
