Can you describe the process of communicating with a cellphone using AT commands?

Hi! Can you describe the process of communicating with a cellphone
using AT commands? I don't really know anything about that. I have a
SonyErricsson T230. Do I need a USB cable or a serial COM cable? I
heard that hyperterminal is user if COM cable available. What about
USB cable? it's easier for me to get one. can you describe what
software do I need, what steps do I have to follow to send my mobile
simple instructions and view the reaction?
