Default Chocolate and VX8350 microsd card and mp3's

Do I need the "music kit" to listen to music on these phones? Can I
just use a microSD writer and copy MP3's on to the card, put it in the
phone, and listen to it?

No you don't need the kit. Just format the card in the phone. Then use
the card reader to put your mp3's in the "My Music" folder. Keep the
filenames less than 32 characters and don't use any non standard
characters in the name. Songs with DRM protection probably won't play.
Put the card back in and reboot the phone. Works great in my 8350.

My brother has the 8300 and he just writes to the memory card and inserts in
phone.

It's often a LOT less hassle to do it that way, and often faster too.
Writing to a memory card is trivially easy. Dealing with a USB sync program
is usually NOT as easy. I've been doing this for years as a way to listen
to podcasts on the phone. It's easier to keep a couple of memory cards
handy for writing the mp3 files. That way I can download them to the cards
without having to tie up the phone during the process. With MicroSD cards
it's a little tricky since they're so small, but it's still easier/faster.

I just did that. Put it in the music or the sounds folder.

MP3 and .WAVE as well as MIDI all work OK/

Now I am trying to figure out how to plug in some ring tones.
