Default Cracker Jack Toy phones

FWIW: In July my NE2 kicks in. Currently I have a VX8300 that has some
heft to it in that at least the case is metal. My point is that every
now and then I wander by the Verizon store and look at the new offerings
but they seem to have the weight and substance of a Cracker Jack toy
(for those of you who can remember that far back) with a keyboard. Am I
one of the few left whose primary interest is only in making phonecalls
with a phone that is likely to survive several drops to a concrete
floor? I really don't care about music players (my iPod does that
nicely) or data plans (computer), etc.

Are there new phones that have heft and survivability as a main feature?
I only saw one ruggedized Verizon phone on their web site but I highly
value holding it in my hand first. Am I a latent Luddite?

My G'Zone phone has been thru a swimming pool, hacky sacked, kicked, and ran
under water I love it has 144 hours on it and it won't drop a call. Hard to
scratch to with the teflon coating. I didn't try the drying pan as in the
demo yet but i did halfway freeze it and it still works.

i have insurance btw.

You're not the only one whose primary interest is only in making
phonecalls but you may possibly be the only one who continually
throws your phone on a concrete floor. I don't know of any phone
that will survive that w/o a HUGE amount of good luck.

FWIW, weight is become important to many people so the lighter
weight phones are what we're going to have.

Since your "new every two" will probably get you a phone at no cost,
the extra features are free, you don't have to use them. I did
almost the same search that you're doing.

No. New phones will take a little some beating but I'd recommend
the insurance plan, even for your old phone.

I went to a local dealer so I could do exactly that! I'm glad I did,
the phone I was planning to get was too narrow for my hand making it
very awkward to use, I would have had problems with it. My second
choice was much better suited for me and I got it, used it, hated it
and re-activated my old E815.

As I recall, the super sturdy phone was pricey. For my money, it was better
to get a spiffy belt holder (to avoid the floor drops I used to do) and I
have a spare cheap phone from ebay. I can transfer my service to the backup
phone from the VZ website at any time.

Verizon is great now, but do you really want to lock in for another 2 years?
A lot can happen in 2 years.
