I am using an Altell card in my router to communicate.
Two days ago, I lost the ability to send email with the message |msmtp:
recipient address xxxxxxx@yahoo.com not accepted by the server
|msmtp: server message: 554 Service unavailable; Client host [98.104.171.124]
blocked using
|zen.spamhaus.org; http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=98.104.171.124
|msmtp: could not send mail (account suttonmachine from
/home/claude69694/.msmtprc)
|
I had changed nothing in my msmtprc.
Since the problem started, I have double checked all settings, talked with my
ISP, read many sites to try to get a clue and nothing works.
msmtp, ubuntu 10.4, wicd, Crosstalk router.
Could the problem be with Alltel?

Well, they are no longer Alltel, but... yes, the problem IS on their
end.
It appears that Spamhaus is blocking that server not because it's
emitted spam, but due to policy:
Internet providers *tell* Spamhaus to list certain IP's on the PBL. It's
a voluntary thing, meant to help prevent spam, unlike other Spamhaus
lists (where you get on the list because they have actually seen spam
coming from you).
My guess is that Alltel or Verizon Wireless listed that IP at some
point, decided to start using it for actual customer email, and never
told Spamhaus to de-list it.
I wish I knew who to tell you to talk to at VZW, but... I don't.

The way I read the link, if my connection has authorization, the server is
supposed to accept it even though the address is listed on PBL.
I have a dynamic DNS which changes every time I connect.
I have recorded 4 different IP addresses that are blocked and have made many
many more connections that I have not bothered to record.
It seems odd to me that there are dozens of IP addresses blocked over a three day
period.
Not arguing, but just trying to understand what is going on.

Maybe you might want to read the spamhaus link.
The first line says that the email is not blocked.
It then goes on to explain that it is an authentication problem.
So why is my authentication not being accewpted?
Are there others here using msmtp that have knowledge of this problem?

Two thoughts:
1) Was msmtp working, and then it suddenly stopped working, but you'd
not made any changes to it? If so, I'd call Verzion.
2) If it never worked, OR if it stopped working after you made changes,
make sure msmtp *is,* in fact, sending your login and password.

I called Verizon.
After patiently wearing out the person who answered my call, she had the bright
idea that she would transfer me to her tech person who would know how to help.
He had never heard of spamhaus.
He had no idea what PBL stands for.
It went downhill from there.

Actually, it IS a problem with your setup. You thought you could send mail
from a dynamic IP address (dial-up, DSL, etc.). You can't. Thank spammers
for that.
You need to relay your mail via your carrier's outbound mail server.

Look at the error message I posted and check the IP numer for ownership.
Then please explain to me how my email is being sent if not through my ISP.
Also in the link is an explanation by spamhous as to how dynamic IP addresses
work.
Again, please explain how mine differs.

Your device is connecting DIRECTLY to the destination mail server. You
should NOT be doing that. You should be connecting to your ISP's mail
server for relay. Since you didn't configure that, YOU are at fault.

What you think is happening is not what is actually happening.

No, the problem is you need to route all your email through the alltel smtp
server.

host: suttonmachine.com
suttonmachine.com is my account at my ISP
So it is the same thing as if my ISP was gmail and it read "host: cssjr@gmail.com

That host line, smtp.suttonmachine.com , is the only way we could get a
connection when I set it up several years ago.
I appreciate the info and will check it out.
Thanks.
