My son continually either loses his phone or somehow manages to damage
the charging ports on EVERY phone I've ever gotten him. This is why I
never buy him a new phone (at least not from Verizon) and get new, or
mostly new, from Ebay.
Anyone recommend a good, durable vzw phone that I can get him
(again...) that won't be too bad as far as any texting he does? He
has said that for some reason the phones that have charging ports with
internal contact pins are the ones he invariably ends up breaking and
hence cannot be reliably charged.
I'm initially thinking of the LG VX8300 as I know it has always been
one of LG's better, more reliable phones - more so than their follow-
on models of the phone.

Why not let the lad buy his own replacement phone thereby teaching him some
responsibility and giving him incentive to be careful with his toys. Betcha
the lost/damaged phone problem goes away with the first phone that comes out
of his wallet...

The 8300 is a workhorse of a phone. I've got two 8300s we still use on my 3
phone plan. I'd have three of 'em but I need a smartphone for myself
(business). Highly recommended. Good quality build, good quality voice,
strong vibrate, strong speakerphone. Just a good phone. Proprietary non-USB
charging port and charger. But I've never had one fail.
Note: Ignore the folks that give you parenting advice rather than phone
advice. (some peoples kids...) lol

I don't know how texting is with a VX8300, but I've used one for 3 years and
find it extremely reliable in every respect. I got a gel skin for mine,
which gives it a little protection and makes it easy to grip. I have always
charged mine in my truck, in a pretty awkward position, and the contact
never lets go. I bought one for my dad, who broke his, on Ebay for less than
$100 shipped

The 8300 is a god reliable phone but I suspect the marginal reliabililty or
durability advantage the 8300 has over other phones is puny compared to the
determination/ability/talent to break stuff some people have. This reminds
me of the people that buy SUVs to be safe but wouldn't spend 8 seconds of
effort to become a better driver. They are focusing on the wrong thing, a
magic-bullet, if you will.

Texting must be doable, heaven knows my son does enough texting with his
8300.

Definately doable, but if he currently uses something with a qwerty, it'll
be slower
