Default gotten worse

I've had Verizon Wireless since it was BAM I think. I don't even
remember it's been so long. My contract ended and I'm finally on a
month to month with them now. Well, my records indicate 2 years have
past and since I haven't signed anything or talked to them, it better
be on a month to month now.

I do seem to think their service has gotten worse over the years,
especially the last couple. I use and have Cingular with work and
actually have seen them get better in the last two years. While
Verizon still charges much more for their service/minutes then
compared to every other service provider around, has anyone else
experienced more issues at all? I'm certain of more dropped calls for
no reason....that's always happened with Verizon no matter what phone
model I had.

Just curious.

My experience: high prices-- but good network and phone service. Been with
them since Airtouch days.

Much is said about the high prices of VZW. I don't see it today. I have been
with VZW (and Airtouch) for around 8-10 years. I recently did a price
comparison of my 2100 minute family plan with VZW. Once everything was
considered, to make it apples to apples, VZW was about the same. Example:
T-mobile offers plans that sound cheaper, but without free nights and
weekends. Etc. I compared Cingular, T-mobile, Sprint and VZW. I could not
find any significant difference in price.

I can't say anything has become worse. VZW just gets more solid as time
goes on. They added a bunch of sites in my area.

You might be surprised if you actually compare prices "apples for apples".

I dumped 'em for Alltel in coastal SC a few years ago. They dropped the
regional service trying to get more money for less minutes for national
service few people ever need. I also got tired of being lied to.

Alltel sells me 800 mins with free N/W, free LD, free M2M on Alltel for
$46, including the tax loads. The same $39 plan on VZW is 300 minutes
with stiff rates if you go over. It's a no-brainer. Alltel's system is
smooth across Eastern SC, all 800 Mhz. VZW had no service north of
Georgetown, SC, at Myrtle Beach, so bought up some mom and pop shop's PCS
license to have "something" up there. South of Charleston, to Savannah,
they also had no system, but have since bought up another small shop on
800 Mhz. There hasn't been much "construction" unless you count the new
sales offices.

If I go to Florida, I dial 611 and buy 100 minutes of nationwide coverage
for $10 that doesn't "expire" if I don't use it all. If I'm in Florida
and run out, a call to 611 will buy more added to the bill. I remember
when I was a regional Verizon customer being charged $276 dollars extra
for making a few phone calls in Florida during a month-long trip.
Alltel's way is much better. In our area of the country, they also have
much smoother coverage in the countryside where I have to work.

If Cingular works better where you live for the same or less money, I
think it's a no-brainer to jump ship. This company loyalty nonsense you
always see here never ceases to amaze me. The corporation doesn't care
about you or me or anyone. When you jump to Cingular, don't sign any
contracts. Take in a Cingular phone your company has stashed in a drawer
for disposal that still works and put it on Cingular. I've never had a
contract with Alltel. I owe them nothing. There's no sense becoming a
contract slave to anyone if you can easily avoid it. Of course, I also
don't do mortgages, another personal choice. I'm not fond of bankers,
either, driving my country into ruin.

Isn't Number Portability great?....(c;

So why contradict yourself. Just recently you described that you need
skype out/in/left/right in your house because Altel doesn't have good
coverage there. I have 3 bars from VZW in my basement.

Of course not, they are not my partner, I don't sleep with them and
simply purchase a service from them and there is no reason to insult
people who know how to compare and make decisions. I chose the carrier
that provides the best service where I live and travel. If someone else
came along with something better I would be using them.

Oops...changed what I said (or meant). Alltel works fine on its low signal
in my house. My point was that many who post here have useless signals
inside their houses. For those people, Skype is a very cheap alternative
if they already have a computer that runs and a broadband connection....

I'm proud that you live next door to a VZW cell tower. Thousands who've
posted here over the years are not so lucky. Their phones work out in the
yard or outside their office building. Your case isn't everyone's
case....which was my point posting about Skype that many in that situation
don't know about....

Now, be a good boy and go back to your basement where the signal is
better....(c;

Larry,

First off, what kind of VZW plan is $39 for 300 minutes? Isn't AC II $39
plus tax for 450 minutes?

.....and notwithstanding the fact that Alltel is the only company I'd jump
ship for, if only they sold service in NYC Metro, how's Alltel's coverage in
Upstate New York?

The old AC1 plan had a $35/300 minute rate, with $5 extra for MTM. I
have that plan, but they threw in 1000 MTM minutes for free, and I get a
discount of 20% per month, so I'm paying $28.

300 minutes wouldn't normally be enough, but Cingular, Sprint, and
T-Mobile are so poor in my area, that most of my calls are MTM because
anyone that cares about coverage is on Verizon. If Cingular, Sprint, and
T-Mobile improve, then a lot of people might leave Verizon, which would
make the 300 minutes insufficient. I also still have 8:01 p.m. off-peak,
which reduces my peak minute use significantly.

Alltel, as a landline provider, only covered smaller areas. As a
wireless carrier, the largest market they served was Cleveland, at least
until they BORG'd CellularONE (Western Wireless).

And I don't think the Western Wireless purchase gave them any
significantly larger markets, and I know for sure they aren't in NYC.

I don't believe they're in any of the other sizable cities in NY
State, either... tho I could be wrong about that. I think the closest
they get is parts of Eastern PA.

Charleston is a decent-sized city, but it's not huge. Even Cleveland
is only the 25th-largest metro area in the U.S.

Eastern PA was years ago. The area was surrounded by BAM. I used to be
an Altel customer before the area was traded to VZW just after it was
formed. I don't know how they are now but they weren't big on spending
money on infrastructure then.

In every range of usage, the top three carriers are almost the exact
same price, as is Alltel.

Look at "http://www.mobileburn.com/plans.jsp?source=MENU"

T-Mobile is often a little less, but doesn't include mobile to mobile.
This can make a huge difference in areas where Verizon is the dominant
carrier by a big margin, such as where I live. I only have 300 peak
minutes, but I rarely use them up because the vast majority of cellular
users in this area are also Verizon subscribers.

Try checking the $39.99 plan for each carrier and comparing them.
T-Mobile is actually the highest cost per minute. Since T-Mobile somehow
has the reputation of being the lowest cost carrier, it's interesting
that T-Mobile has a significantly higher ARPU than Cingular or Verizon
(Sprint's ARPU is still being boosted by the high-revenue Nextel
customers, so a good comparison isn't possible).

Sprint actually has the best plans, with nights starting at 7:00 p.m.,
and not gouging for going over your plan minutes. Sprint's current
problems go much deeper than their plan costs.

http://alltel.com/personal/wireless/...erage_map.html

Coverage is there, but Alltel serves the South and has no presence in NYC
so you're out. That wasn't my point. My point to the poster was, IN HIS
AREA, Cingular may be a better choice than VZW, which isn't omnipotent as
some seem to think, in all areas. If his office phone on Cingular works
great, that's what he should have, himself, instead of a VZW phone will
less stellar service....at certainly a higher price. If he's on Cingular's
system with free M2M, he's also not gobbling up minutes talking to his
coworkers on the office cellphones from his, another important
consideration, too!

My Alltel phone worked great in NYC, as it did upstate, but I don't know
(or care) which carrier handled the call. I'm certain it wasn't Alltel, no
more than it is in Californicate.... I paid 10c/min, on my SC/NC Alltel
regional plan in NYC, buying national coverage as-needed, not all the time
I don't need it on VZW. At that rate, 400 mins for $40, roaming in NY by
the minute is almost as cheap as 450 mins/$40 on VZW AC....except most of
the time at home I get 800 mins for $40, a better deal for infrequent
travelers on a little better system, where I live.

Other carriers in NYC must have good systems for less than VZW, right?
They're not native to my area and have no presence here...same as Alltel
there....

I still think his Cingular choice, if it works like he says, is a no-
brainer to churn and take his number with him.....is that ok?

That feature costs an extra 2 or 3 dollars on Alltel. One of my friends'

I have 8:01 p.m. on Verizon, so I won't change plans as I'd lose the
early start time.

No, it's $7/month per line.

And pretty pointless since INnetwork started. I think everyone in my
family is using VZW as are most of my friends. We can call whenever we want.

We were actually referring to Alltel, not VZW.

Alltel has "My Circle"....10 unlimited minutes numbers on ANY carrier, not
just Alltel for free on all but the most basic plans. This includes
landline, business, any cellphone, anywhere in the country.

It not only includes calls TO these 10 numbers, but it also includes calls
FROM these 10 numbers....no airtime either way.

Why are you telling me this? If you recall, I was the one who told
*you* about it.

That's what I've found too. I don't even use up my 300 minutes per
month, because Verizon is so dominant in the areas where my friends and
family reside, that I'll be lucky to use 200 minutes that aren't IN.

So why not start a new, off-topic thread like you normally do?

Default "Faves"

My only problem with everybody's version of "My Faves", or whetever your
carrier calls it, is that the unlimited feature only works ONE WAY, that is,
if you are with, say, Alltel, and you have me (Verizon) as one of your
"preferred" numbers, you can call me and I can call you unlimited for YOU,
but the "unlimited" is only for YOU.....I still get charged minutes.

They should call this feature "SELFISH MINUTES".....what good is unlimited
minutes on one end only? The person on the other end still gets charged (on
a cellphone, anyway----does it work calling a landline??).

Just slightly OT....I ran all my contacts through VZW's "IN NETWORK" filter,
and put an asterisk after the "IN" people's first names in my phonebook.
This way if you call my cell, and the CID comes up "Larry* Cell", I know I
don't have to watch the clock.

The best feature I heard of from Alltel was from a friend in Florida who
travels back and forth to NY regularly. Alltel lets him make and receive
unlimited calls to/from his HOME telephone, even though the home number is
with Sprint. Now there's a feature those of us with a family at home while
we travel can appreciate.

Yes, Alltel is a solid carrier, and they offer innovative features we can't
get on VZW. My hope is that they will expand to Nationwide
service...competition's almost always good for us. At this point I couldn't
even consider changing carriers in NY though.

Yes, on Alltel's Circle of 10 numbers, it matters not what those numbers
are, just that they're not in Afghanistan, of course. Home phones,
cellphones on other carriers, even Skype..(c; ...all fine.

Like you have room to talk. I see your post count here is back up.
You must have forgotten your past embarrassments again.

IMHO, the service has gotten much better.

I've been a VZW customer for over 4 years. Been happy since then.

In that four year time, the native service area has expanded by leaps
and bounds. They have either added service (PCS bands) or purchased
small mom & pop cell companies (and a few medium sized ones too) to
cover a bunch of the country.

Are they perfect? Hell no! No one is. Wireless is full of problems.
But overall, VZW has done the best job.

Are they the best solution everywhere? No, chosing the cell service
you need depends on what you need where you need it. VZW can't have
the best signal in all areas of the country. In some cases, it makes
more sense to go with Sprint, Alltel or (gag, choke) Cingular.

But in my travels througout the US (and in fact, I'm on vacation right
now), VZW works very well where I've travelled.

My wife used to have Cingular, but she came over to VZW in July. She
hasn't looked back!

Dave
