Default How can my laptop go web surfing with a cellphone connection?

I don't have $60 to pay for a 5GB data plan. So I'm think how I can
have my laptop go online through a cellphone connection. I heard some
way-smart people know how to make that work. I wish I can do that
too. But what phone is required exactly? How does it work exactly?
Do I have to pay extra for anything? Which other cell phone company
to go with if not Verizon? Thanks.

I recently ordered an Imagio from Verizon (it arrives tomorrow).

In chatting with the Sales Rep, she stated the Imagio can be used as a modem
and is capable of connecting a laptop to the Internet.

You have to pay extra for the data service.

Years ago there was something users liked to call "the back door" where
we could connect our cell phones with a cable to a USB port on a
computer and get online using voice minutes. If your plan had unlimited
weekends and after 9 PM you could surf away for free.

A couple of years ago Verizon found the key to the back door and locked
it. Now you have to pay for data service to tether your laptop to your
cell phone.

If you have a handset data plan the only thing standing in the
way of your use of it tethered to your computer is the software
on your phone. The big CDMA carriers, Sprint and Verizon, generally
have this locked down so you need to pay for the tethering data
plan for the function to work at all, but many of the phones sold
by the big GSM carriers, T-Mobile and AT&T, are often more accomodating
(and you don't need to buy a GSM phone from the carrier in any case).
My unbranded GSM phones allow tethering on any kind of plan, as does
my Motorola V9 from AT&T.

Of course the fact that the phone will do it doesn't change the
other fact that tethering is prohibited by the Terms and Conditions
of the cheaper handset data plans, so you've got to be willing to
violate the terms of service and hope the carrier doesn't notice
and cut you off. I will generally pay for the service I want if I
really need that service to work.

Yes. And... then there's the fact that now (unlike previously) a phone
number normally will not connect unless you have paid for the Broadband
Access plan (i.e. your phone number is your userID on the system - you
either have one or you don't). If it does connect, it WILL be tracked as
"tethering" and you will probably wind up paying the KB rate ($15.00/M.

Free QNC data on PagePlus. Very slow, but free. Google "QNC PagePlus
Tethering".
