OK, so I bought a Samsung Smooth and signed up for the Verizon Prepaid
Plus plan. A cell phone number was assigned to me.
NOW: How do I port the cell number from my old cell provider, Virgin
Mobile? Can't find any info on the Verizon web site for how to do
this. (There is info for how to port a number *when you sign up* but
unfortunately I didn't do that.) Your help appreciated. Thanks!

Try asking at your Verizon Wireless store! They should be able to tell
you whether you can do it and if so how.

*gasp* You're suggesting talking to a live person at a brick-and-
mortar store? But... I'm so accustomed to doing *everything* on teh

The best thing to do is to go buy another Samsung Smooth (they're only
$15-20) but don't activate it on InPulse. Instead activate it on
PagePlus, which will port your number for free. You'll save a lot of
money because PagePlus service is much less expensive, but still on
Verizon's network.
Unless you plan to be doing a huge amount of mobile to mobile calling on
Verizon's network, Prepay Plus is not a good deal. Now that you've
activated the phone on InPulse you can't move it to PagePlus.

Often talking to people can be quite valuable. It is sort of a personal
human thing and often questions/issues/whatever can be resolved immediately.

I was wondering, what's the difference between that plan and straight
talk's plans, other than 1000 minutes and 30MB data? Does prepaid
plus have data access?

For StraightTalk you have a choice of three basic handsets and
apparently you can't use other handsets such as smart phones.
The service is on Verizon's network _only_, with no roaming (even at
extra cost), so it won't work in places like Alaska, or in many rural
areas where CDMA coverage is provided by smaller carriers.
You do get 30MB of data versus 20MB on PagePlus. On the $30 StraightTalk
plan you get 30MB of data _plus_ 1000 text or picture messages, while on
PagePlus any picture messages you send will come out of your 20MB of
data. On the $45 StraightTalk plan you get unlimited texting, but their
web site does not say that this includes picture messaging, which is a
subtle difference, so presumably on the $45 plan picture messaging comes
out of your 30MB of data.
Verizon InPulse Prepaid Plus charges 25¢ per picture message and Mobile
Web costs 99¢ per 24-hour period. That's a good deal for mobile web if
you're a heavy user, but in general Verizon InPulse is a very bad deal.
Perhaps if you plan to do a lot of free mobile to mobile to other
Verizon users then InPulse is a good deal, but that daily fee is
ridiculously high.
Personally, I would avoid StraightTalk because I often travel to places
where Verizon isn't the carrier. I.e. if we go to Yosemite, which we do
several times a year, coverage for part of the route is on a small CDMA
carrier so presumably StraightTalk would not work. There is no GSM
coverage at all on much of the route. Only a CDMA phone that can roam
onto other carriers will work. Ditto for parts of southern Oregon where
we go occasionally, or Yellowstone, or parts of Wyoming. If you never
leave urban areas with native Verizon coverage then StraightTalk is a
good deal if you don't care about getting a smart phone.
