We were traveling and I missed the June 28 cut off for keeping my
unlimited data plan with a new phone. Have a couple of questions:
1)I am still under contract until some time in August and I believe they
won't change my plan if I don't renew, Is this correct?
2) I'm going to Europe next summer and just saw a commercial for a 4G
Global phone with a decent data rate. I'm thinking of upgrading to one
of those maybe in the winter. Any suggestions here? I could trade DH's
dumb phone for a global dumb phone to use in Europe on VZW's global
plan, too, but it would be nice to have the data and WiFi.
3) Under the new "everybody" (or whatever) plan, would a tablet be
included in the data package? Would there be a monthly fee for the
tablet like there is for a smartphone?
TIA. I know all you gurus will come through for me. The new pricing is
quite confusing.

Correct. You can stay on your current plan month to month as long as
you want.
Answer on remaining questions = I don't know, sorry.

I'm in the same boat (Sep).
Per Verizon you can keep your current Unlimited plan but would lose
the subsidy (pay full price) on a new phone with a new contract.
Per SMS you can trade your Unlimited ($30) for a grandfathered 2G tier
plan ($30) and get the subsidy. (That would effectively be no change
for me since I never get close to 2G.) I've not checked that out with
Verizon since a lot can change before Sep.
The new Share plans would cost me $20/mo more which essentially erases
the subsidy. I probably will go with plan 2, but depending on how much
data you use YMMV...

Great question.
As far as I know your unlimited plan remain in tact....for now. If you
change phones or add devices, such as a tablet, you will be required to give
up the unlimited plan and choose a share everything plan. Or until Verizon
changes policy again and eliminates "unlimited" completely.

If you're a heavy data user then you'll just have to forgo the subsidy
and pay for a new phone. Otherwise, they'll let you move to tiered data
without moving to Share Everything.
Look at your data usage over time. Do you regularly go over 2GB? Very
few unlimited users come anywhere close to that amount.

How does that help when the end cost is MORE expensive even with a low
data plan?

The tablet can share the data, but it costs per device $10

I have never, to my knowledge gone over 2 GB. I don't stream videos. I
rarely listen to Pandora (we have XM in all vehicles and I have an iPod
I prefer for my own music) The only data hog I have that I know of is
the MLB At Bat app that DH uses to listen to games when we can't get
them any other way.
I'm waiting for them to post the bill ending July 1 on the web site as I
just returned from an RV trip where I used the phone a lot. Even so, if
I have to pay $15 extra one or two months a year, that's not so bad.
If I paid cash for a new phone 3G, then I could keep the same plan I
have now?

That doesn;t seem to be what they are saying...
Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.
Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.
The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

Stopped by the local store today. That's what they told me. A new 3G
phone would cost me retail less $50 and an additional $30 per month!
What's up with that?
I was advised to keep my current phone and plan. I have insurance on
the phone so if it breaks, they will replace it less the deductible
which is less than a new phone.
I would also lose our discount on the data.
So with the new plan being $30 more (for 3G) and the subsidy for a new
phone being $50, I'm best off staying put. I love my HTC Incredible.

Short answer...YES. If you pay full price for a new phone you can keep your
existing plan...for now. If you add a device, such as the tablet you
mentioned, or add a second smartphone, both of which require data plans, you
will be required to switch to a shared plan...and pay more money.

Per my local Verizon (corporate) store, it can not be added to an existing
unlimited plan. If you add a tablet, or any other data-plan- requiring
device, or take advantage of a subsidized phone, you will be required to
change to a share everything plan.

And these were two distinct answers to two distinct questions.
yes, they won't change your plan if you don't renew
yes, you can use a tablet on the new plan but it costs $10 per tablet
device to add on to it. To do that you have to switch plans.

You seem to be right. But not doing the phone upgrades mean that you
are paying whatever part of your plan cost is to subsidize the phone
swap without getting the benefit of it.

Of course. This is a price increase hidden by changing the product and
charging differently for it.

Do you really think that when people are refused a shiny new phone
subsidy, anything will remain hidden?

If they want to keep their Unlimited, and most will, they will be
refused. Then Verizon will try to upsell them and the price increase
will no longer be hidden...

From what I saw and heard in the local store the subsidy is so small
compared to their charge for new phones that it might not be worth it
anymore. Even the dumb phone I was looking to replace (with a global
phone) was $200 with a $50 rebate. IMHO, BFD.

It might be cheaper to buy a phone on line and stay with unlimited. The
store said that I could do that without changing the pricing program.

That's correct. Logically, you should always get the subsidized handset
as soon as you're eligible. Worst case, you sell the new handset if you
don't want it. iPhones have a huge market on craigslist. That $649
retail iPhone that you get for $199 would sell for at least $400 to
someone that wanted to use it on Pageplus.

For an iPhone, the subsidy is "worth" ($450-$30)/20 months, or $21/month.
