iphone on a cruise for e-mail

Verizon is my wireless provider.
Instead of taking my laotop with me on a Carribean cruise, I would
like to use my iphone for e-mail (no telephone or texting).
The Holland America cruise line charges a fee for internet
connectabiity, sufficient for laptop send/receive, ---- is this
sufficient for iphone e-mail incoming and outgoing messages also; or
do I have to pay Verizon roaming and other fees?
I would appreciate comments from someone who has used an iphone for
e-mail aboard a cruise ship.

If their WiFi is good enough for laptops I'm sure it's good enough for your
iPhone.

BTW IIRC you could text if you send text e-mail messages to your friends
phones. Have them send a message from their phone to your e-mail and you'll
have their phone's address. I've done this in the past with text & audio
(e-mail to phone) and text always came through no problem.

As long as you know their carrier you can send an e-mail to their phone:

Virgin: phonenumber@vmobl.com

Or you can sign up for a Google Voice account and send texts via Google
Voice's web site with no texting charges.

I expect that the cruise ship blocks all VOIP type applications.

A touch OT, but: I know for T-Mobile it makes no difference whether you
use the pure 10-digit version of the US phone number, or the 11-digit
version (with country code 1 prefixed) or even the full internationalized
dial-string +1AbcEfgNopq (with Abc = area code, Efg = local exchange, and
Nopq = last four digits).

Do you know how true that is for each of the other carriers?

I just looked into my own OE address book for my cell (AT&T) e-mail addy and
it doesn't have the 1, just the 10 digits followed by @ txt.att.net for
text & mms.att.net for multimedia.

the response:

on a cruise ship. I will be happy to assist you with your concerns.
We value you as a customer
Mr.xxxxxl, cruise ship service allows you to make and receive calls,
send and receive text messages and use data services on select cruise
lines while at sea.
The rates to use your phone on a cruise ship are currently $2.49 per
minute and $.50 per text to send /$.05 to receive.
In order to use your wireless service on a cruise ship, a free feature
called International Dialing is required. This feature will also allow
you to call from the United States to other countries.
Please be advised your account must meet the following eligibility
requirements before the International Dialing feature can be added:
1. Must be active for at least 90 days. Customers with less than 90
days of service must go through the manual review process.
2. No carry over balances.
3. No Service interruptions due to payments in last 90 days or reverse

The information you received was wrong. Well, not totally wrong (because
what the person told you was correct) but it did not answer the question
you asked. Your phone WILL be able to use the ship's Wifi. However, it
is pricey and slow so don't have any great expectations. But it won't be
any worse than using your laptop. A better option is to be on the
lookout for free Wifi spots in your ports. Look for people sitting
around with a laptop and you will find them, or ask the crew.

I just got back from a Caribbean cruise and did not have a lot of luck
with free Wifi. The only place I was able to use it reliably was a
restaurant we had dinner at in San Juan. The data service in Old San
Juan was only 1X and my phone warned I was going into roaming mode. I
called Verizon CS and they assured me that it was included with my
domestic plan an allegedly put a note saying this in my record.
Hopefully I won't find any charges when I get my bill!

I left my phone in Airplane mode in other ports to avoid having to pay
for texts from the assorted places I receive them from. I told people
who might want to contact me that they should call or text my wife's
phone, since she does not get calls or texts.

BTW, 100 minutes for $15 is very cheap for a cruise ship. I find it hard
to believe that you're going to get 15c/minute on such a small package.
It's typically 60c+ per minute (75c without a package on Celebrity).

Thanks for y'alls comments, Bill
I mistyped the cost for the Holland America internet cafe fees for my
laptop: it is "100 minutes for $55", however there is a bonus amount
of minutes when I sign up early, and over past cruises I have never
run out of minutes over a week - providing I download to the laptop,
shut wifi off, read and respond off line, and then go on line again to
send. I check the mail just once a day, and I do not send pictures
until I return home.
Please note that the reason for my post is just to replace the laptop
e-mail with my iphone for e-mail, I do not intend to use the telephone
or text capabilities.
Most of the responses were for telephone access rather than e-mail
only access.
