Default LG 8100 modem problem

Have had LG8100 for a long time. Used to work with inet with internal modem,
slow but OK for on the road quick email when no wi-fi. Stopped working,
Verizon said it should never have worked. Loaded software form MY ISP onto
phone and told it to use the comm port for the modem. Also set the software
up to use the internal modem (RJ-11) and the software works OK. Tell the
software to use the modem in the LG phone and it looks like it is being
trapped by Verizon. The screen says "data call" and then it says "invalid
login or password" I know the password and login are correct because they
work when I use the land line. (All I am doing is telling to use comm 6
instead of comm 1) I can call the number with the phone and the ISP modem
answers so the phone is connecting. It really does look like VERIZON is
trapping data calls. Can this be? All the dunderheads at VZW will say is
they can't help me because the modem feature is not supported on the LG
8100, but for $60 a month I can buy the data feature for my account. Am I
imagining this or is VZW really preventing me from calling my ISP on my cell
phone?

Anybody know a work around. I use this 2 or three times a year. I do not
want an extra $720 a year on my bill. Would a throw away phone I bought
minutes for do what my expensive VZW account will not?

Seems to me that t-mobile has a cheaper plan and they throw in unlimited
access at all of their hot-spots for free, too. As my contract is up in 2
months am I wrong?

yes....
Duh... it's a cell phone, *NOT* a land line!

It would appear you do not have the technical expertise to answer the
question. It IS a modem and as a modem, it works for many other things. I
have used to it do many other modem related things including sending
faxes!!! The question is, for those who grasp the point, has Verizon
modified the phone to trap IP data transfer and force it all through their
data network?

Actually, it ISN'T a modem in the traditional sense. It's called a
CSD, or circuit switched data modem.

Digtal cellular "modems" connect to the analog world via your
cellular company. The "modem" communicates with your provider who
maintains analog modems at their HQ to connect with the landline
system.

It does not work without the blessing of your cell company, period.

Yes, again, Because your carrier let you.

No, they blocked access to their real modems. Call them, tell them
you need CSD on your account- it was probably shut off by mistake.

Thank You. I knew it was a circuit switched modem. Your answer sort of
confirms they are blocking the use of IP data. (Non IP data transfer
including fax and terminal emulation work.) They want about $60 a month to
turn it back on. It's called their "unlimited data package", which BTW has a
10GB limit (hence the name "unlimited"?)

Does anybody out there know if there is a disposable cell company that does
offer this service?

Nice quote BTW!

To be fair, the $60/month is for THEIR data service (their "broadband
access" which they act as ISP) rather than "dial up" where you
provide your own.

Sadly, no prepaid service in te US supports CSD. As far as regular
monthly service, T-Mobile does (but no faxing- they charge $10/month
to turn faxing on!) AT&T used to support CSD (it's grandfathered on
old accounts, I believe, but new one don't get access.) Sprint had it,
but I don't know if they still do it either.

Thanks! I'll throw up the backup this time...

Well, sorry to tell you this, but it isn't really a modem as such, and mine
works just fine when I use the drivers for it, a cable/tethered to my system
(and not the same com port as my landline modem), and use my vzw logon stuff
instead of landline stuff... (have both cell and dsl from verizon, the cell
uses different logon stuff than my dsl)...

Oh well, YOU are the one with the problem, I'm not, it works fine and has
for many years, both on qwk2net AND 1x/evdo, both require different logons,
so if you want to be an asshole and essentially call me stupid, I'll just
laugh about jerks like you, that can't make it work and berate anyone that
offers a suggestion....

Hi Dave;

I was essentially doing what you had said and it worked for a couple of
years. (Win Dialup rather than WorldNet software) It was great and worked
with my old T-730 and my VX8100. Late last year even that stopped. I had
been using the familiar your-cellphone-number@vzw3g.com at #777, but of
course that no longer works. QNC/QNC no longer works either which I started
using back with my T-730 and the old Verizon office. I think the tip off to
block me was that a long time ago, I had bought Verizon office so they knew
I was flying under the wire. I confirmed today that essentially in 2006 they
began to turn it off as they caught you. Unfortunately at the company store
and at 611 they tell me I need to buy Broadband access for $60 a month for
anything to work. I do have 1x/EV on the 8100 but it apears I am busted. I
asked about just a few days at a time and it was like a train wreck. Phone
works with bitpim and all the other toys so in essence I think I knew my
answer, it's because they WONT let me.

Default Re: LG 8100 modem problem

and the answer is...

There was a loophole at one point that let you use 1xRTT, and only be
charged minutes, but that has since been closed, for the most part.
Officially, using 1xRTT for data requires a plan. <snip> By default, phones
that support both 1xRTT and EV-DO will route data via the EV-DO network. (my
added comment... to force you to buy a plan!!)

a further quote from an informative web site... my advice is to ignore VZW
<snipped> - whenever I call VZW I get conflicting answers and half the time
I know more about their service than they do.

BTW: Thank you to the person I will not name to prevent a cease and desist
order being issued to your site....

Unfortunately. somehow they trap all "data" calls and force them to the
EV/DO and then they catch you. 14.4 doesn't work as a result. I would
takeit, if I could get it. Seems it's done in the phone (VX8100) as many
people told me they are flying under the radar. None have my phone!

Any ideas who I can call about the $2 a day thing. I would love that but
again today I was told it was on once it was on. One guy (at 611) told me it
would extend my contract for two years, too. Right now I'm done in two
months and am not sure whether I will renew or not. (over this issue)
