Default link cell phone to car phone

I am trying to help a friend out with something I believe is possible but
am not 100% sure how to do.

He has a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado that is prewired with Onstar AND cell
phone. He is a contractor and wants to be able to have one number that goes
to both the car and his mobile phone.

He COULD call forward the car phone to the mobile phone but then he would
be paying for 2 cell phone contracts plus Onstar for some reason also
charges a hefty premium.

It was my understanding that the only thing a cell phone needs to become
active in a particular system is a chip. I am wondering if there is someway
to get and install a verizon chip in the car to activate it for verizon. If
it matters, the verizon cell phone is a 325i. I don't know what kind of
system is in the Silverado.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The OnStar phone in his Chevy is already a Verizon phone.

Each cellular device on Verizon has what is called an ESN.
(Electronic Serial Number)

This ESN is unique to each device.

So, your friend has 2 ESNs.

When a VZW cellular phone is 'activated' a phone number is pared
with an ESN, allowing that phone access to the system.

1 ESN per phone number.

So, in other words - no.

He can change the Onstar cell setup over to Verizon by adding the truck as a
member of a family plan. Verizon has a special area that handles that. He
can get info from Onstar. The normal Verizon people aren't able to handle
this. He will lose a couple of Onstar features. One is the traffic updates.
Other than that he gets all the Onstar and the Verizon. I did this last year
when I got my new Suburban and fell in love with the hands free calling. He
can forward from cell to truck and it is mobile to mobile. BTW there is no
voice mail on it on the truck. He should at least check into it to see if
it might work for him.

Hpoe this hepls,

/John C.

Thank you very much to all who responded. Is there a way to have the phone
without the Onstar? He doesn't need the Onstar but wants the phone. Thanks!
