Some phones will reset the lock code to the last four digits of your phone
number when you do *228.
Don't know if it will work with your phone, but it can't hurt to try.

I assumed that reprogramming a phone would wipe out the contact list, and
option settings. Not so?

As far as I can tell the only thing that gets changed on my phone is the
lock code.
