Default M800 - I got suckered!

The M800 is going back on Monday. I found a very obscure Motorola
specifications page that tells more of the "true story" of this huge
phone....

I didn't do all my homework and I'm sorry to get anyone's hopes up. From
the webpage:

Here's the TRUTH:
"What are the specs of the M800 Bag Phone?

Radio Performance:

Bands: CDMA 1X 800/1900MHz; AMPS 800MHz
Output Power: CDMA 1X 800/1900: 0.25W; AMPS 800: 0.4W"

The ugly truth comes from Motorola on this unfortunate pig....
It's SIZE gives you the impression this is a nice, POWERFUL bagphone....
It's not. It IS a V60i board in a massive case.....

A V60 runs these power levels, too. Motorola and the carriers, trying to
extricate rural users running 3 watts from their old bagphones, is
playing this scam with the carriers......

Why does EVERYTHING to do with a cellular phone have to be such a SCREW
JOB on the consumers?

Please forget I ever mentioned this pig......Damn them all.

Ack, thanks for the warning, no point in buying one. My cobbled together
bag phone using a pro-install car kit and an amplifier has more power, just
no battery. Sigh. At least it is made better than the consumer stuff.

Actually, now that you mention it, when the thread here

http://tinyurl.com/2mwctn

happened both the M800 and M900 bag phone web pages did say 3W/2W (which
matches the "more than 3x distance"), both on the main page in big letters
and under technical specifications. Now they don't.

Of course, that was when you couldn't actually buy the phones. I guess
either FCC certification or US carrier feature editting may have
happened in the interim?

I can't believe Motorola thinks we are all so stupid! The damned thing
has the SAME specs with the SAME display as a V60 in a huge box. The
lights must be what draws 400 ma off 12VDC on transmit!

Damn I'm mad. I'm so tired of taking a cellular ****ing every time from
every company.....

Motorola needs to EAT all these.

Oh, I'm sure this is CARRIER based, just like all the other ********
nonsense that screws us out of bluetooth connectivity, disconnecting
standard features then selling it back to us for more money...all that
crap. We're not Motorola's customers, CARRIERS ARE. Motorola responds
to CARRIER demands, not product innovation.

What better time for the goddamned FCC to take control and FORCE them all
to put whatever equipment YOU have on ANY Licensed system.

It's all about maximizing REVENUES for the big corporations, same as
always. Customers they give a **** about....all of them.

Larry,

I looked through the manual and found a small mention of an optional booster
for it on page 17. That's the PDF version, may vary from the real one.
Perhaps that's how you are supposed to get the full power output.

Thanks, Thomas. After my initial rage wore off and turned to revenge,
I've decided to keep "The Beast", mostly out of spite and, upon further
inspection, I pulled it out of the case, which is quite easy as it is
only held in place by 4 strips of Velcro Motorola seems to love.

If you remove the metal frame it's all mounted on from the case and turn
it over, you'll see there's only a tiny, metal-encased, control
board/audio power amp/charger in a shielded enclosure. The RF is TOTALLY
generated in the candy bar and is fed to the antenna out the back of the
candy bar to the antenna TNC jack on the frame. I haven't had that
apart, yet, due to the "lawn leaf project" I'm currently taking a break
from as I type this. I have, however, had time to fit my DA4000 3W
800/2W 1900 Mhz bi-directional linear amp into the large space under the
frame...(c; I suppose, by now, you can see the "revenge phase" of my
scam discovery, and my interest in keeping The Beast with this new
development. The Beast allows me to move the DA4000 amplifier from the
one vehicle to the bagphone's case, where an even higher gain, dual-band
antenna will reside outside the bag's stupid cover. The fold-down
antenna has been replaced by a neat jumper cable connecting The Beast to
its 3W amp hidden under the deck of it. The external antenna will also
afford connecting a vehicle external antenna to the phone in ANY vehicle
at 3W, instead of just my service truck where the amp was permanently
mounted and run off the house battery. We WILL be running up to 3 Watts
on ALL modes to extend the RANGE as many of the false advertisements
cached on Google, show.....whether "they" like it or not...(c;

I stumbled upon some Navy RF Radiation Hazard warning stickers someone
gave me and I'm going to put them on The Beast, just for fun...

The "Booster" I stumbled across on the Moto website, as an accessory sold
separately, was my first clue something wasn't right with this phone and
made me wonder about the lack of power specifications until I stumbled
upon the FAQ where they finally revealed it was only a 1/4 watt
transmitter, properly covering their sorry asses if anyone, like me,
should make an issue out of it. "We told you. You just didn't find
it."...typical of Corporate America's legal departments, today.

This MASSIVE moto url is the ONLY place I can find the truth about output

Larry,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear that there is space for the
amplifier inside the bad. If it is cheap enough, it might be worth my while
to get one.

Yeah, I think it will fit but we'll be short on battery. Putting the amp
with a bigger gelcell in the daughter bag under The Beast may be a better
idea. I got lots of candidate gelcells in the 5-10AH range layin around
the shop.
